  12. Welcome to "BadLands BlackJack", EnQue Software's first game in the "Vegas
  13. at Home Series" for Windows. This is not just another simple BlackJack game
  14. with boring graphics and silly sounds, it's a full simulation complete with
  15. stunning ray-traced graphics and digitized cards and voice.  Top that off
  16. with the ability to customize your rules and strategy charts, and instructions
  17. on how to learn to beat the odds, and you have a complete, entertaining, and
  18. instructional BlackJack tutor right at home.  If you ever have or ever will
  19. play BlackJack for "real" money, or you simply like to relax and try your
  20. luck, (or skill?), then this game's for you - it can make you a winner!

  22. We recommend a minimum of 4-Meg of memory, a 256-color or higher video card,
  23. and a sound card.

  29. affordable prices, we cannot account for all user configurations and
  30. actions. Therefore, use of this product constitutes an "assumption of risk".

  32. software and documentation. In no event shall the authors or EnQue Software
  33. be liable for incidental or consequential damages in connection with or
  34. arising out of the performance or use of this product.  Furthermore, we make
  35. no recommendations that you do or do not gamble for real money, and make no
  36. guarantees or assumptions as to your success or failure.

  38. ---------------------------- TROUBLESHOOTING -------------------------------
  39. NOTE: According to Microsoft, Windows is the ideal game environment because
  40. it handles all the details such as graphics card and audio board support;
  41. you write software to a common specification and Windows handles all the
  42. details.  While this is true to some extent, we have found that many of these
  43. drivers are buggy - we have gone to unbelievable lengths to work around these
  44. problems but we cannot account for every configuration. (There are tens of
  45. thousands!).  Therefore, some of you will have trouble, and in all
  46. likelihood, some of you will not be able to run "BadLands BlackJack".  We
  47. apologize in advance for this.
  48.  
  49. While we are unable to return your calls should you need assistance, we will
  50. be happy to answer questions via E-Mail, BBS, or FAX.  Most problems will be
  51. driver related and we may be unable to help you - we cannot test all
  52. possibilities and may refer you to your hardware vendor.  However, here are
  53. some guidelines.
  54.  
  55. -- WINDOWS LOCKS UP
  56. If windows locks up and you see the opening screen, it is most likely due to
  57. a sound card problem.  Try the two tests described under "No music" and "No
  58. Sound" below.  If these don't work, consult your sound card manual or
  59. supplier.  If they do work, you may have to run the game with the command
  60. line paramters -m for no music, or -s for no sound, or -q for
  61. neither.  For example, run "C:\BBJ\BBJ -m".  From Program Manager, do File,
  62. Run with the above command or change the command line for the icon if
  63. you added it to a group. To do this, hold down the Alt key and double click
  64. on the icon.  Change the command line and click on OK.  Refer to you Windows
  65. manual for additional help.  Here are some more guidelines.

  67. 1) Try closing off all other applications.
  68.  
  69. 2) Exit Windows, power your machine down then back up, and try again.
  70.  
  71. 3) Re-install the software.
  72.  
  73. 4) Try changing your video driver as described in your Windows manual and
  74.    video card manual.
  75.  
  76. If it STILL doesn't work, we're out of ideas: sorry!!!  Drop us a note
  77. outlining your configuration and problems in as much detail as possible
  78. and we will try to resolve the situation.

  80. -- NO MUSIC
  81. Music is played using windows standard MIDI interface.  If you can play
  82. the MIDI file BBJ.MID (in the directory you installed BlackJack) using Media
  83. Player or one of your sound card programs, then they should work in our game.

  85. -- NO DIGITIZED VOICE
  86. Sound is played using windows standard WAV interface.  If you can play
  87. the WAV files (in the directory you installed BlackJack) using Media Player
  88. or one of your sound card programs, then they should work in our game.
