  21.          From CD-ROM
  22.          -----------
  23.          To install the demo version of Command & Conquer from the
  24.          CD-ROM drive, run the install program located in the
  25.          demo directory the CD-ROM drive. Run the "install" program
  26.          if you are in DOS or the "setup" program if you are in
  27.          Windows. This program will install all necessary files to 
  28.          the hard drive. The demo can then be played by executing 
  29.          the program "C&C" located in the installed directory. To 
  30.          enjoy the movie sequences, the CD-ROM must be present in 
  31.          the drive.

  34.          --------------
  35.          To install the demo version of Command & Conquer from the
  36.          distributed .ZIP file do the following;
  37.      
  38.          a. Create a directory on a hard drive that has at least
  39.             20 megabytes of free space.
  40.  
  41.          b. Unzip the demo version into this directory.
  42.  
  43.          c. Run the "setup.exe" program to specify your sound card.
  44.  
  45.          d. Execute the "C&C" program to run the demo version.

  48.  1. Autodetection of Sound Cards
  49.  ===============================
  50.  
  51.  C&C utilizes sophisticated techniques to autodetect your sound card.
  52.  Because of the vast number of machine configurations possible on PC's,
  53.  C&C may not autodetect your sound card or it might misidentify the card.
  54.  For this reason you should treat the detected card as a suggestion only.
  55.  If you know that the detected card is definitely wrong you can override
  56.  the selection and pick the correct card from the SETUP program.
  57.  
  58.  If you select a sound card that is not present in your machine, your machine
  59.  may lock-up, or the sound card may stop responding. Either of these
  60.  situations may be corrected by simply turning off the computer, waiting 15
  61.  seconds and then turning it back on.

  63.  2. Known Sound Card Problems
  64.  ============================

  66.          Windows 95
  67.          ----------

  70.          Creative Labs - Soundblaster 1.0/1.5 card
  71.          -----------------------------------------
  72.          These early Soundblaster cards do not support some of
  73.          the features which are built into later versions of the
  74.          card. This may result in lower audio quality on
  75.          these cards.
  76.  
  77.          Soundblaster Compatible Cards
  78.          -----------------------------
  79.          The Soundblaster code in C&C is written for 100% Soundblaster
  80.          compatible sound cards made by Creative Labs. If you have a
  81.          Soundblaster compatible sound card from another manufacturer
  82.          you may experience stuttering or popping in the sound, or even
  83.          no sound at all.

  85.          If you are unsure of the correct Port, IRQ and DMA settings
  86.          for your Soundblaster compatible card, try typing SET from
  87.          the DOS prompt. If your machine has been configured with a
  88.          BLASTER environment variable in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file you
  89.          should see a line similar to:
  90.  
  91.          SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 H5 T4
  92.  
  93.          The number after the A (i.e., 220 in this case) is your port address;
  94.          the number after the I (5 in this case) is your IRQ and the number
  95.          after the D (1 in this case) is your DMA channel setting. Armed with
  96.          these numbers you can go ahead and manually select your soundcard
  97.          from the SETUP program and enter the Port, IRQ and DMA in the boxes
  98.          when prompted. If you have a Soundblaster 16 or AWE32 soundcard and
  99.          you are having difficulty with autodetection, these same comments
  100.          apply except that you may have to enter the number after the H as
  101.          your DMA setting, depending on your configuration.

  103.          Compaq Computers
  104.          ----------------
  105.          Some Compaq machines may not autodetect the installed sound
  106.          card.  If this occurs, try selecting Sound Blaster Pro/Pro2
  107.          from the SETUP program.
  108.  
  109.          Sound Galaxy Basic 16
  110.          ---------------------
  111.          This Soundblaster compatible card can sometimes be incorrectly
  112.          autodetected as a Soundblaster Pro or Soundblaster 16, causing
  113.          unpredictable results. We recommend that you manually select
  114.          Soundblaster and enter the Port, IRQ and DMA values that
  115.          correspond to your card. See the comments under Soundblaster
  116.          compatible cards above.

  118.          ESS AudioDrive
  119.          --------------
  120.          Under certain circumstances the autodetect code can incorrectly
  121.          identify this card as a Soundblaster 16. If this occurs you will
  122.          need to override this driver by selecting ESS AudioDrive with
  123.          the correct values for your system.
  124.  
  125.          Adlib Gold
  126.          ----------
  127.          Under certain circumstances the autodetect code can return
  128.          incorrect Port, IRQ and DMA settings. If you are having difficulty
  129.          obtaining sounds on this sound card try manually selecting the
  130.          card in the SETUP program and entering the correct Port, IRQ and
  131.          DMA settings.

  133.          Golden Sound Pro 16
  134.          -------------------
  135.          We have found that better results may be obtained on this
  136.          sound card by reducing the game volume from the in-game
  137.          sound control menu. Volume levels should be set to about
  138.          half way.
  139.  
  140.          GRAVIS ULTRA SOUND
  141.          ------------------
  142.          Some Gravis Ultrasound owners may experience audio clipping
  143.          and/or reduced game performance.  We recommend that you turn
  144.          the volume for musical scores all the way down (off) to see
  145.          if this helps.

  148.          If you continue to have trouble with your soundcard please
  149.          consult the troubleshooting section of your soundcard manual
  150.          or contact Westwood technical support as described in your
  151.          C&C manual.

  153.  3. Windows Notes
  154.  ================
  155.  
  156.          Windows and Windows for Workgroups v.3.1 & v.3.11
  157.          -------------------------------------------------
  158.          C&C uses special code to launch itself from the Windows icon
  159.          and will attempt to close any active Windows applications prior
  160.          to running. You will not be able to access other Windows programs
  161.          when C&C is active.
  162.  
  163.          This greatly enhances the performance and playability of the game
  164.          on 486 class machines.
  165.  
  166.          Windows 95
  167.          ----------
  168.  
  169.          Installing C&C on an 8MB Windows 95 system:
  170.          ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  171.          If you have an 8MB system you must make an
  172.          adjustment to the setup program information.

  174.            1. Click on the "My Computer" desktop and select
  175.               the CD-ROM drive that contains the C&C CD.
  176.            2. Right click on the "_SETUP.EXE" program there.
  177.            3. Select the "PROPERTIES" menu item.
  178.            4. Click on the "MEMORY" tab.
  179.            5. In the "MSDOS PROTECTED MODE (DPMI) MEMORY" field
  180.               select 16384.
  181.            6. Click on the "OK" button.
  182.  
  183.          You will then be able to install Command & Conquer 
  184.          normally.

  186.          C&C on an 8MB Windows 95 system:

  188.          If you have an 8MB system and you are running Windows 95,
  189.          you may need to make a slight adjustment to the PIF
  190.          (the Program Information File) after installing C&C:
