Artist...ERIKA
Track..LIE DOWN
Erika (Woods) first came to public attention as a vocalist with folk rock band Ruby Blue,
appearing on a number of that band's early singles before becoming a fully fledge member of the
band in time for the band's major label debut, "Down From Above".
Ruby Blue allowed her to get a full range of experience in the music business with
extensive touring, including appearances at both the Glastonbury & Cambridge Festivals as well as
numerous venues up and down the country, including a number of headline gigs at London's
Borderline.
Following a shake up in Ruby Blue caused by the departure of a couple of band members,
Erika moved up to more of a lead vocalist role, Ruby Blue having been more about harmonies, and
together with Ruby Blue co-founder, Roger Fife, took the band down more of a rhythm based road.
Ruby Blue returned to former label Red Flame and quickly went into the studio to record a
new album. In the meantime Red Flame released "Broken Water" that featured material not on
the bands first two albums, but which contained a number of songs that included Erika's vocals.
1993 saw the release of the new album, "Naked Truth", an album that contained a number
of excellent roots/pop/dance crossovers as well as a critically acclaimed single, "I Feel Good Now".
However with the exception of Roger Fife, the band went through what seemed like an on going
series of personel changes and later that year Ruby Blue finally split.
New management were signed and Erika formed a short lived band, Stonehoney. It was,
however a move to Brighton that seems to have revitalised her and before long she was back in the
studio working with producer/sound engineer Tony Phillips, who has worked with the likes of All
About Eve.
The recent demo session has seen Erika moving more into a pop environment, though one
with an emphasis on songs and a sound that has been described in some quarters as 'organic'.
The track featured here, "Lie Down",co-written with Tony Phillips, comes from those
sessions and represents Erika's first release as a solo artist, though with songs of this quality it
hopefully won't be too long before she's back in the studio recording her debut solo album.
