EID-UL FITR Breaking of the fast - 1 Shawwal (March 1994)
Held at the end of the month of Ramadan when the period of fasting is over. Preparations begin several days in advance when many houses are painted bright colours. Everyone goes to the Mosque where prayers are read and alms given to the poor. Services are sometimes held in the open. The rest of the day is spent in celebration. Gifts are given, 'Eid' cards sent, parties held and visits to friends and family made. On everyone's lips is the greeting "Eid Mubarak", meaning "Happy Eid". Since alcohol cannot be consumed many special dishes are prepared, for example, Shir Korma, a mixture of milk, vermicelli, dates and nuts.
