  7. THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION DESCRIBES THE FUNCTIONS OF THE FULL 
  8. MUSICNET CD-ROM:

  10. Welcome to the MusicNet CD-ROM!
  11.  
  12. This document describes the functions of the MusicNet CD-ROM and will
  13. help you get started exploring new music.  MusicNet lets you listen 
  14. to, learn about, and order the latest music at your convenience.  
  15. The MusicNet CD-ROM contains selections from hundreds of the latest 
  16. releases covering a wide variety of music styles.  This premiere 
  17. issue features selections from Rolling Stone magazine's 1994
  18. Rock & Roll Yearbook-the albums selected by Rolling Stone as the most
  19. significant rock and roll releases from 1994!  You can listen to 
  20. selections from the latest albums, view videos and album artwork, 
  21. and get album and artist information including artist profiles, 
  22. discographies, and track listings.

  24. Inside the MusicNet CD-ROM
  25.  
  26. There are four areas in the MusicNet CD-ROM:  MAIN MENU, BROWSE, 
  27. INFO,  and ORDER.  At the Main Menu, you can move to the Browse and
  28. Order screens by selecting the buttons labeled Browse and Order. 
  29. At any other place on the CD-ROM, you can move between these sections
  30. by holding down the mouse button while pointing at the MusicNet logo 
  31. in the upper right hand corner of each screen.  To go to another 
  32. section, scroll down to where you wish to go and release the mouse
  33. button.  Also note that every item that can be selected on a screen 
  34. will be highlighted with a thin yellow border when the mouse passes
  35. over it; the yellow border thickens when the item is selected.

  37. MAIN MENU
  38.  
  39. The Main Menu is the first screen you see after installing the disc. 
  40. It contains buttons for Browse, Order, and Quit, a list of some of
  41. the artists featured on the disc, and a window showing selections 
  42. from videos featured on the disc.  To browse music or place an order, 
  43. simply click on the Browse or Order button.  Or, you can click on the 
  44. video playing in the window to go directly to that album in Browse.

  46. BROWSE

  48. Use the Browse button to select an album to preview on the MusicNet 
  49. CD-ROM.  From this point you can also compile a shopping list to 
  50. keep track of the albums you want to order. After you select the
  51. Browse button the Browse screen appears.  The bottom of the screen 
  52. contains a wall of album covers available for previewing in the 
  53. categories selected.  Holding the mouse button down on the View or
  54. Style buttons displays a list of the available categories.  
  55. View categories are:
  56.  
  57. Video:     Albums with video and audio selections on this disc.
  58. Audio:     Albums with audio selections only on this disc.
  59. Phone:     Albums with audio selections available for previewing
  60. through the MusicNet phone service. (See MusicNet Phone Service for
  61. more details.)
  62. Index:      A list of the albums on the disc.  By clicking on the
  63. Artist label or Album label above the index, you can sort the list 
  64. alphabetically by artist name or album title.  You can search for a 
  65. particular artist or album by simply typing the name on your keyboard. 
  66. The index automatically moves to that section of the list. 
  67. Select an album or artist from the index and it automatically appears
  68. as the featured album on the Browse screen.  
  69.  
  70. You can also sort the index by View and Style categories.
  71. Style categories include:
  72.  
  73. Rock:      rock, pop, alternative, hard rock.
  74. Urban:      rap, hip-hop, R&B, soul.
  75. Country:     country, country & western, bluegrass.
  76. Jazz:        be-bop, big band, contemporary.
  77. Blues:      blues,  both contemporary and traditional.
  78. World:      music by indigenous peoples from around the world.
  79. Other:      new age, religious, children+s, folk, experimental, 
  80.         comedy, dance.
  81. All:          all of the above.

  83. You can filter the albums that appear in the wall of album covers by
  84. View and Style categories.  For example, if you select both Video 
  85. (from View) and Rock (from Style), the wall of album covers will
  86. show you all the rock albums on the disc that contain video 
  87. selections.

  89. To select a specific album to preview, either click on one of the
  90. album covers in the wall (lower section of the Browse screen) or 
  91. drag the mouse over the wall while holding the mouse button down
  92. until an album you want to preview appears in the upper part of the
  93. screen.  When an album is selected, its album cover, artist name,
  94. title, tracks available for preview, and price are displayed on the 
  95. upper part of the screen.  The tracks available for preview may 
  96. include video, audio, or phone selections.

  98. Video selections:  If the track includes a video selection, the video
  99. icon, shaped like a film strip, appears next to the track title.  By
  100. selecting either the icon or the track title, a 30-second selection
  101. of the video will play, temporarily replacing the album cover. To 
  102. stop playing the selection, click on the icon or track title again.
  103.  
  104. Audio selections:  If the track is an audio selection, the audio icon, 
  105. shaped like a small speaker, appears next to the track title.  By
  106. selecting either the icon or the track title, a 30-second selection
  107. from this track will play.  To stop playing the selection, click on
  108. the icon or track title again.

  110. Phone selections: An icon shaped like a phone appearing next to a 
  111. track title indicates the album is available for previewing only
  112. through the MusicNet phone service (See MusicNet Phone Service for
  113. more details.)

  115. The Browse screen also includes your Shopping List. This is where you
  116. can place albums you want to purchase while you continue shopping for
  117. other albums on the MusicNet CD-ROM.  To place an album on your 
  118. shopping list, click the Add To List button.  The album currently
  119. featured in the upper part of the Browse screen will be added to
  120. your list.  You can add to or delete from this list.  To order the 
  121. albums on your shopping list, select the Order List button that 
  122. appears in the upper part of the Shopping List.

  126. To get information about an album you've selected, click on the Info
  127. button.  This screen provides extensive information about the artist
  128. and album, including artist profiles written by the MusicNet
  129. editorial department, track listings, album credits, and a 
  130. discography for the artist or band.

  132. Special Feature:  This premiere issue of the MusicNet CD-ROM includes
  133. editorial from Rolling Stone magazine's 1994 Rock & Roll Yearbook!

  135. Special rock and read feature: You can listen to music while you read
  136. about the album by clicking on the Auto-play button. When Auto-play
  137. is enabled, all three tracks from the album you've selected 
  138. automatically play in succession while you are reading the 
  139. information.  To disable Auto-play, simply click on the Auto-play
  140. button again.

  142. ORDER

  144. All of the albums you've placed on your Shopping List will appear on 
  145. your Order List.  You can order the albums on your Order List 
  146. directly from MusicNet, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.  The Order
  147. List displays the price of the albums and the shipping cost.  For 
  148. delivery to CA or OH add applicable sales tax.  Pricing is subject to
  149. change.   Shipping is $3.95 for any size order.  Delivery charges are
  150. for domestic (including Alaska and Hawaii) shipments only.  For 
  151. shipment outside the United States, call 1-800-MUSICNET for
  152. information.  All albums in stock will be delivered overnight. 
  153. Orders can be placed up to midnight EST for overnight delivery. 
  154. Orders placed on weekends (Saturday or Sunday) will be delivered 
  155. Tuesday.   MusicNet accepts VISA, MasterCard, American Express, and 
  156. Discover.

  158. You can remove albums from the Order List by first selecting them and
  159. then pressing the Remove button. Albums removed from the Order List 
  160. are also automatically removed from the Shopping List.  There are 
  161. three ways you can send your order to MusicNet:

  163. 1.  On-line:  Your Order List automatically exists on your hard drive
  164. as a text file.  When you quit the MusicNet CD-ROM, the text file 
  165. will appear in the MusicNet Player folder under the name -MusicNet
  166. CD Order (Date)+ or -CD Order (Date).+  You can capture this file and
  167. e-mail it to MusicNet.  Please remember to include your name,
  168. address, credit card information, and your MusicNet membership number
  169. (located on the packaging for this disc) in the file, as well as a 
  170. phone number, fax number, or on-line address where we can contact you
  171. in case there is a question about your order.  Remember, MNI cannot 
  172. be responsible for securing credit card information during order

  175. 2.  Phone:  Call 1-800-MUSICNET.  Please have your credit card 
  176. information, MusicNet membership number (located on the packaging for
  177. this disc), and a list of the items you wish to order available for

  180. 3.  Fax:  Your Order List automatically exists on your hard drive as
  181. a text file.  When you quit the MusicNet CD-ROM, the text file will 
  182. appear in the MusicNet Player folder under the name -MusicNet CD

  184. any word processing application (to format this properly, use 9 point
  185. Courier font) and fax it directly to MusicNet at 408-644-2029.

  187. information, and your MusicNet membership number (located on the
  188. packaging for this disc) on the form, as well as a phone number, fax 
  189. number, or on-line address where we can contact you in case there is
  190. a question about your order.
