Chris Shipley brings more than a dozen years of publishing experience to the position of Editor for Computer Life, defining and coordinating the editorial content of the publication's online publishing ventures on America Online and the World Wide Web.
Prior to joining Computer Life, Chris was executive editor for The Interchange Online Network, where she was responsible for defining editorial objectives and publishing tools for the computing section. Similarly, through the Ziff-Davis Personal Computing newspaper supplement and her book How To Connect, an illustrated guide to online communications published by Ziff-Davis Press, her guidance and straight-forward editorial style has helped reveal the benefits of being online to millions of consumers.
Chris' current focus is the development of "community" between Computer Life readers and the magazine itself, opening channels of conversation and discussion about personal computing. "We wanted to create an opportunity for our readers to talk about computing," Chris explains, "and at the same time provide Computer Life editors with direct contact with their readers -- know what they're thinking right now."
Before joining Ziff-Davis Interactive in 1992, Chris helped launch PC computing. As the magazine's executive editor, she served as a lead features writer, and developed the magazine's new product section. An 11-year Ziff veteran, Chris has also held a number of editorial positions at PC WEEK, including deputy news editor.
Chris finds herself surrounded by computers outside of work, too. "Since I put my finances on my personal computer, I have become completely dependent on it," she explains. She does all her banking via modem, hardly ever having to deal with real money or real bank tellers. "My hands shake if I actually have to write a check," she jokes. "If I could just get my computer to spit twenties from the hard drive, it would be the only ATM I would ever use!"
