In PIHKAL, Shulgin discusses MMDA-4, 5-methoxy-2,3-methylenedioxyamphetamine
and says it's synthesis ought to be fairly difficult. I sent him e-mail
asking about this and he said it was a long time ago that he looked at it
and there has been new chemistry developed since.
Turning to chem abstracts, it turned out that the precursor
5-methoxy-2,3-methylenedioxybenzaldehyde has since become a known compound.
I do have the ref, but not on me at the moment. It was an early 1980's
paper, about '83-'84.
The point is, the synthesis of the hitherto unknown and likely quite
interesting MMDA-4 should now be a triviality.
Shulgin reports in PIHKAL that 2,3,5-trimethoxyamphetamine is weakly active
at the 80 mg level, I seem to recall.
So, anyone got a lab :-)? In Canada, it would be a legal compound. In the
USA it has apparently been explicitly scheduled even though it is unknown.
In other countries, check your "designer drug" laws, I guess.
I mention this just in case anyone finds it interesting. I know I did.
No point really. Isn't that what this group is for :-) ?
BTW, the synthesis of the benzaldehyde was from 5-methoxy-2,3-methylenedioxy
bromobenzene, and the bromo was replaced by forming the phenyllithium using
butyllithium, which was then quenched with DMF to introduce the formyl group.

While browsing through the archive at hyperreal.com I was interested to
discover, in the MDMA directory, a post of mine to alt.drugs.chemistry
that discussed the existence of a method for making the benzaldehyde
precursor to MMDA-4. For completeness of info, you may wish to add that
the reference for the synthesis of 5-MeO-2,3-MD-benzaldehyde is: Chem.
