  3. Tutorial: The Attorney Generals of the 50 states
  4.  
  5.      The attorney general is the chief law enforcement officer of 
  6. each state. Duties vary from state to state, but generally, the 
  7. attorney general will represent the State in court. In the last 
  8. two decades, attorney generals have become consumer advocates and 
  9. often institute litigation on behalf of the people of the state 
  10. under the doctrine of parens patriae (they are the "father" or 
  11. "head of the family" of the people of the state; therefore, they 
  12. can generally represent the interests of the people of the 
  13. State.) Recently several attorneys general have sued milk 
  14. producers to collect overcharges due to bid rigging in public 
  15. school milk contracts. Often the attorney general will bring 
  16. legal proceedings against crooked businesses to cause them to 
  17. "cease and desist" illegal practices. The attorney general may 
  18. actually investigate, but often consumers complaints will lead to 
  19. action.

  21.      Some attorney generals will also advise on state law on 
  22. request, but this is not always certain. (And you may not get a 
  23. correct answer.)
