README.TXT June 2002
This archive contains ARJ version 2.81a OFFICIAL FULL RELEASE from ARJ
Software, Inc., http://www.arjsoftware.com. This is a major
enhancement and bug fix release.
ARJ is a file compression utility with more file management functions
than other popular file compression utilities. The version management
and backup support features of ARJ strongly set it apart from other
file compression utilities. ARJ is command line driven which makes it
easier to use in automated processes such as providing backup for an
accounting package.
The use of ARJ in a business, commercial, government or institutional
environment EXCEPT for a 30 day evalution period requires a license.
This version will expire slowly after a year or so. Registration
avoids expiration.
This software as originally released by ARJ Software, Inc. came
"sealed" in an ARJ self-extracting archive with an ARJ-SECURITY digital
envelope to prevent tampering. Re-archival of this software will
destroy this security feature "seal".
In addition, this release is set up to demonstrate the new execute
after extraction option. This self-extractor will execute the program
ARJTEST.EXE after a successful extraction. ARJTEST.EXE is a simple
display-a-message program. Because this self-extractor is ARJ-SECURED,
the user will not be prompted for permission to execute the ARJTEST.EXE
program.
Please note that some versions of Norton Anti-virus will report a false
alarm when scanning this archive and/or its contents. This
self-extracting archive will test itself during extraction and report
any corruption or infection.
This version of ARJ uses a new registration scheme. This obsoletes all
ARJ registration keys prior to 2.7x. ARJ 1.x and 2.x registered users
are eligible for a free replacement registration key. Please supply
proof of registration with a copy of your signed license document, or a
copy of your registration keys, or a printout or screen capture of your
ARJ.EXE registration display which we will use to check our records.
This release of ARJ now saves the Windows file properties of date-time
created and date-time accessed. This will cause archives to be
slightly larger in size. This feature can be disabled.
ARJ is not just another archiving program. The flexibility of ARJ
lets users manipulate and manage files in ways that no other archiver
or file manager does. In addition, ARJ provides ARJ-PROTECT which is
a data error correction facility that allows for the repair of many
damaged (ARJ-PROTECTED) archives.
It is STRONGLY RECOMMENDED that you run the TESTARJ.BAT batch file to
verify that this version of ARJ.EXE is working correctly.
Even though ARJ and ARJ32 are very compatible, they are considered
SEPARATE AND DISTINCT products from ARJ Software, Inc. for licensing
purposes.
MAJOR FEATURES OF ARJ INCLUDE:
-----------------------------
Year 2000 compliance.
Windows 95/98/ME long filename support in ARJ and REARJ (not WinNT/2K).
Another program named ARJ32 for Win95/98/ME/NT/2000 (32 bit version)
supports Windows NT and Windows 2000 (and Windows XP) long filenames.
The ability to repair small amounts of archive damage (headers and file
data) for an ARJ-PROTECTED (-hk) archive.
The ability to process and archive up to 50,000 files at one time (up
to 260,000 files for registered users).
The ability to store many different backups (chapters) within a SINGLE
archive and restore any specific backup. This is a powerful file
version management feature.
ARJ provides excellent file compression in terms of resulting archive
size and speed.
ARJ has the option to create multiple volume archives with one command
making ARJ useful for making backups to multiple floppies or archiving
a very large file to several floppies without "SLICE"ing.
ARJ has the ability to generate multiple volume archives with all
volumes with an EXE file extension to simplify Internet browser
downloading of such archives.
A myriad of commands and options to provide ummatched flexibility in
archiver usage.
