Large, webbed feet make it a good swimmer, and its broad, black tail -- about ten inches long and six inches wide -- is used as a rudder when swim- ming. When slapped against the water, the tail serves as a warning, but it can signal other emotions as well. When a beaver stands up on its hind legs to cut down a tree, its tail is like a fifth leg for balance. The beaver is designed to swim and work under water.
