OCR: That sound you hear has been a part of Alaska for a long time. Natives used dogs to pull heavy sleds for centuries, perhaps much longer. Russian traders in the 1700s, Hudson Bay Company trappers in the early 1800s, and gold rush prospectors in the 1890s, all came to rely on sled dogs for winter transportation across Alaska's rugged terrain. One of the early professional dog sled drivers in Alaska was Harry Karstens. As a young man, Karstens pioneered a sled dog route from Fairbanks to Valdez and later hauled mail to the Kantishna mining district north of Mount Mckinley. Charles Sheldon relied on Karstens and his dogs for supplies and transportation during the winter he studied Denali's wildlife. Sled dogs were also essential to early climbs on Mount Mckinley.
