  22. An Ancient Saga tells us how
  23. in the Beginning the First Cow
  24. (for nothing living yet had birth
  25. but elemental Cow on earth)
  26. began to lick cold stones and mud:
  27. Under her warm tongue flesh and blood
  28. blossomed, a miracle to believe;
  29. And so was born Adam, and Eve.
  30. Here now is chaos once again,
  31. Primeval mud, cold stones and rain.
  32. Here flesh decays and blood drips red,
  33. And the Cow's dead, the Old Cow's dead.
  34. Lo! The Saga thus is told
  35. of how the earth grew dull and cold
  36. And how the Second Cow begot
  37. The children of toilsome lot:
  38. to roam the earth their single task,
  39. to preach of Cow, and Cow the mask,
  40. Until the orient should see
  41. the rising sun -- eternity.
  42. The children of a Lesser Cow
  43. wove the earth from then till now
  44. with silken fibre-threads aglow,
  45. from highest high to lowest low.
  46. A race of wordless prophets was;
  47. Redeem the world! And cow their cause;
  48. Forth to march upon the land
  49. of sulfur mists and ashen sand.
  50. Sigh deeply, lost and last of Cow,
  51. Till the earth with Bovine plough;
  52. Sow the seeds that soon shall be
  53. a fecund vine-- Bovinity.
  54. Dominions, powers, kingdoms bow!
  55. Bovinia rule: reign now, oh Cow.
