As many home dish owners and transportable earth station operators know
trying to get the azimuth and elevation for your dish is a pain in the neck.
Usually you try to get the latitude and longitude from your local Coast Guard,
airport, or geological research office. These sources are in most cases not
all that reliable, so I developed SAT-5 using a graphic display of the
Continental United States and part of Canada and Mexico to enable you to
move a small cursor around the screen and this gives latitude and longitude,
but not in minutes and seconds, but in degrees and 100ths degrees.
The cursor starts in the top middle of the display, to move it you use the
arrow keys to move 1 unit at a time or shift arrow to move 10 units at a time.
When you have moved the cursor to the desired position you may blow up that
portion of the screen,(CTRL [V]) or tap return and you will be prompted for
the spacecraft position east or west. If you don't know the spacecraft position
just tap return again and a chart of the satellites will be displayed.
After that the screen will clear and give you your approximate azimuth and
elevation, I have tested this program against the those offered by G.T.E.
Spacenet, Comsat, and S.B.S. the accuracy falls about 1 tenth of one degree
off of their calculations.
