PRACTICE #9~

For your next practice, try
working with different thick-
nesses of steel. Working with
pieces both thicker and thinner,
you will notice that you have to
change your techniques somewhat.
Experiment with torch angle,
flame size and speed of movement
from right to left. How thin
gauge steel can you weld? See if
you can weld 1/4" thick steel
without difficulty.~

If you need to weld anything
thicker than 1/4" extra precaut-
ions will be necessary. The
sparks and slag will be bigger
and travel farther. The heat
generated will be more dangerous

Try mitering and welding two
pieces of round tubing. You can
use old American-made bicycle
frame tubing again.
Miter one of the tubes to
fit against the other with a
large rat-tail file. Try to get
a fit accurate within 1/8" all
the way around. Weld them toget-
her as indicated, let them cool,
then smash them apart with a
hammer.
