METALS OTHER THAN STEEL

Many gas welders do not realize
that metals other than steel can
be welded with oxy-acetylene
equipment. Welding brass is
easy. It is just like welding
steel, but happens at a lower
temperature.
Since brass is more sensitive
to oxygen in the air, brazing
flux is pasted onto the work
and the welding rod first. When
heated, this flux makes a smoke
that fills the air and keeps
the oxygen away.
Most brazing rods melt at a
slightly lower temperature than
most brass alloys. You can weld
or braze brass with ordinary
brazing rods.

Brazing cast iron is possible,
but difficult. When you heat it,
the affected area tries to ex-
pand, causing cracks because
cast iron is not very flexible.
The way to handle this problem
is slowly heat the whole piece
in an oven. After brazing, cool
it the same way or bury it in
clean sand.
