  14. Many gas  welders do not realize
  15. that metals other than steel can
  16. be  welded  with   oxy-acetylene
  17. equipment.  Welding   brass   is
  18. easy. It  is  just  like welding
  19. steel,  but  happens  at a lower
  20. temperature.
  21.    Since brass is more sensitive
  22. to  oxygen  in  the air, brazing
  23. flux  is  pasted  onto  the work
  24. and the welding rod first.  When
  25. heated, this flux  makes a smoke
  26. that  fills   the  air and keeps
  27. the oxygen away.
  28.     Most  brazing rods melt at a
  29. slightly  lower temperature than
  30. most brass alloys.  You can weld
  31. or  braze  brass  with  ordinary
  32. brazing rods.

  40. Brazing cast iron  is  possible,
  41. but difficult. When you heat it,
  42. the  affected area tries  to ex-
  43. pand,   causing  cracks  because
  44. cast  iron  is not very flexible.
  45. The way  to  handle this problem
  46. is  slowly  heat the whole piece
  47. in an oven.  After brazing, cool
  48. it the same way  or  bury  it in
  49. clean sand.
