A BETTER STEP 5~

Open the acetylene valve just
enough to hear a faint hiss of gas
coming out of the torch tip. Open
the oxygen valve just enough to
hear the hiss increase in volume.
The hiss should still be fairly
quiet. Spark light the flame.
If you have too much gas coming
out of the torch, the flame will
not stay lit, or it will ignite a
short distance in front of the
torch tip.~

Notice the gap.~

If you have too little overall
gas pressure, the flame can back-
fire into the tip. While you see
no fire, you will hear a hiss,
buzz or whistle indicating the
flame is happening inside. Turn
off the torch valves quickly,
because this can eventually melt
the torch tip.~

Kill the flame by lightly
closing the acetylene torch valve
then the oxygen torch valve. If
you reverse the order, you
release a cloud of yucky pure
acetylene smoke.~
