  8.                 A Major Change in Direction for ModemNews
  9.  
  10.         (Stamford, CT) ModemNews Magazine and the ModemNews Express BBS is
  11. changing the direction in which they have been going for the past four and a
  12. half years.
  13.  
  14.         During the summer of 1993 ModemNews will be reorganizing itself to
  15. emerge in September as a central library for electronic publications that are
  16. currently being published that may not be getting the circulation or notice
  17. that they deserve and merit.
  18.  
  19.         For the past four and a half years we have been culling articles and 
  20. stories, opinion and knowledge, from a few other electronic publications, but
  21. mostly from authors who have been gracious enough to write specifically for 
  22. us, and have created an electronic magazine that has found a specific niche 
  23. market within the BBS community. With the use of ANSI color, various offline 
  24. text readers, door programs and Asymetrix Toolbook(tm) we have been bringing 
  25. to you a monthly magazine that has covered almost every topic imaginable.  
  26. From vegetarian recipes to travel, from computer tips and tricks to folk 
  27. music reviews, from political opinion to scientific fact and fiction, we have 
  28. provided the first electronic full featured magazine digest available, and 
  29. have done so with remarkable success.
  30.  
  31.         Since we began publishing in early 1989 we have seen numerous other 
  32. electronic publications come and go. Some have been clones of ModemNews and 
  33. others have been exciting new publications that have found their own specific 
  34. audience within the community. We've done a pretty good job during this time 
  35. to help them along. Using our wide distribution system and international 
  36. circulation we feel that we have made it easier for other electronic
  37. publications to reach their prospective audiences. Now we would like to do
  38. more, and have planned some specific changes in the way you will be seeing
  39. ModemNews in the future.

  41.         Seeing that there are numerous electronic publications currently 
  42. being distributed to the BBS community we believe that we can help those
  43. along that are of high quality and of wide interest, publications that may
  44. not be getting the distribution they need to be as successful as they could
  45. be otherwise. Some have certainly been successful on their own, but there are
  46. literally scores of magazines and newsletters being published on a monthly
  47. basis that rarely reach beyond a small geographic or demographic range. It is
  48. to these that we will become dedicated.

  50.         If you have called our BBS (ModemNews Express!) you will know that we 
  51. have a collection of general utility files, Windows files, typefaces, midi 
  52. files etc., and a collection of back issues of ModemNews. During this summer
  53. of 1993 we will slowly be deleting these files and replacing them with
  54. electronic magazines and newsletters as we find them or as their publishers,
  55. or you, send them to us. For publications that have been around for a while
  56. you may find specific file areas. For others, they may be placed together in
  57. subject specific areas, i.e., poetry, electronics, fiction.

  59.         We will be reorganizing our message bases to better follow this new
  60. direction, dropping some networked message areas and picking up on others. We
  61. would hope to use our net wide conferences on WME, RelayNet and Pen & Brush
  62. to better serve these ends, and as far as we can tell we will not be
  63. duplicating services found otherwise on these nets. We will use the ModemNews
  64. Conference on these nets as a place for publishers of electronic publications
  65. to gather to talk, exchange ideas and discuss problems and advances they may
  66. feel free to bring up. A round table for publishers and readers alike. A
  67. central place on the wide reaching networks we currently carry for interested
  68. readers to find out more about a publication, to locate copies of a specific
  69. publication and where they may submit articles for consideration.

  71.         Recognizing that many publishers may not have a netwide place to go, 
  72. we offer them our services and our bandwith. We would hope our network 
  73. coordinators would not only encourage our change in direction, but support it 
  74. full heartedly. We would hope that other networks will seek out the ModemNews
  75. conference as a service for their own.

  77.         On a quarterly basis we will publish an issue of ModemNews that will 
  78. highlight these publications. Where previously you would find areas of the 
  79. magazine set aside for Travel or Humor or News and Views, you will instead 
  80. find each of these areas focusing on a particular publication with specific 
  81. information as to where they may be found, along with sample articles culled 
  82. from each one. We will try to cover as much territory as we can within each 
  83. quarterly issue, to give up-and-coming, and established publications the
  84. widespread distribution and access we feel this new form of media needs and
  85. deserves.

  87.         What does this mean to you?
  88.  
  89.         If you are the SysOp of a ModemNews NewsStand you will only need call
  90. us on a quarterly basis to gather the latest issue. Our NewsStand List will
  91. include the names of BBS's that will carry ModemNews, along with the home
  92. BBS's where readers will be able to find the electronic publications carried
  93. in the magazine for that issue, and made available on our system by their
  94. publishers.  (Please contact us for further information.)

  96.         If you are the publisher of an electronic publication, you will want 
  97. to contact us about how we can make space available to you on our BBS, and
  98. what you need do to give us permission to reprint portions of your
  99. publication in an issue of ModemNews. These will be well spelled out on our
  100. BBS as a bulletin or available via e-mail on one of our networks, the
  101. InterNet or Compuserve.

  105.     contact us regarding advertising rate information.)

  107.         If you are the creator of a program or utility that can be used to
  108. create an electronic publication we will provide file areas for you on our
  109. BBS and encourage you to frequent the ModemNews conference to assist readers
  110. and publishers alike.

  112.         We hope that our readers and supporters will look well upon this 
  113. change in direction for ModemNews. Once again we will be breaking new ground 
  114. in the BBS community, and will again be on the forefront of this exciting
  115. technology. Helping to bring others along and bring widespread attention to
  116. areas that may need, and deserve it.
