  7.    CONFLICTS WITH 8514A COMPATIBLE VIDEO BOARDS
  8.  
  9.      The IBM 8514a and compatible video boards will conflict with any modem
  10.      or faxmodem you configure as COM4. This is because 8514a and
  11.      compatible video boards use the I/O address 2E8 which is the I/O
  12.      address used by COM4.
  13.  
  14.      If you use an 8514a or compatible video board, DO NOT set your modem
  15.      or faxmodem to COM4. Neither the video board nor the modem will
  16.      operate reliably.
  17.  
  18.      This also applies to video boards based on the S3 chipset.
  19.  
  20.    S3-BASED VIDEO BOARDS
  21.  
  22.      Video boards based on the S3 86C911 controller will use the I/O
  23.      address 2E8 (but won't use IRQ 3). This means you can't address your
  24.      modem as COM4.
  25.  
  26.      The S3 controller has several features derived from the IBM 8514/a
  27.      adapter. Along with these features comes inherent issues with 8-bit
  28.      devices.
  29.      The 86C911 is a 16-bit device that uses x2E8h, x6E8, xAE8, xEE8h to
  30.      access its enhanced more register; all 16 bits are decoded. Since the
  31.      AT bus decodes only the lower 10 bits of the I/O address, conflicts
  32.      will occur between the 86C911 and other devices using the same
  33.      addresses.

  35.    WINFAX PRO LOCKS UP WHEN VIEWING FAILED RECEIVE
  36.  
  37.      SatisFAXtion/200, /400, and Classic:
  38.      When running CASMGR 1.40, WinFax Pro may lock up when you view a
  39.      failed receive event in the WinFax log. Delrina's fix for this problem
  40.      is now available on CompuServe and the Delrina BBS in an archive file
  41.      called CAS.EXE. The archive file contains a program named a README
  42.      file and the program CASFIX.EXE. The README file instructs you to add
  43.      the CASFIX command immediately following the CASMGR command in your
  44.      AUTOEXEC.BAT file.

  73.    THE INPUT FILE CONTAINS HP GL/2 COMMANDS...
  74.  
  75.      ...that are not supported by the emulator. Try setting your
  76.      application to use an HP LaserJet II printer driver.
  77.  
  78.      While FAXPOP does support the HPPCL (Hewlett-Packard Printer Control
  79.      Language) up to and including verison 5, FAXPOP doesn't support the
  80.      HPGL (Hewlett-Packard Graphics Language). Use a printer driver that
  81.      doesn't incorporate HPGL commands.

  83.      For WordPerceft 5.1, use either an HP LJIII driver dated 3-92 or
  84.      earlier or just use an HP LJII driver.

  86.    CAN'T PRINT ON POSTSCRIPT PRINTER
  87.  
  88.      Version 1.40 of the FAX.EXE program only prints on PostScript printers
  89.      when you select Print from the View Screen. If you print from any
  90.      other menu, the computer appears to send the data and the printer
  91.      appears to accept it. However, the page never actually prints.
  92.  
  93.      Intel has corrected the problem and an updated MA.UTL file is
  94.      available on FaxBACK. The MA.UTL file is still version 1.40, but the
  95.      date on the file is 6-92 or later.
  96.

  100.    MODEM WON'T AUTOANSWER WHEN SLS ENABLED
  101.  
  102.      If the SatisFAXtion board is set for "Shares phone line, mostly fax
  103.      calls", "shares phone line, mostly voice calls", or "Shares phoneline,
  104.      has a distinctive ring", modem callers MUST include the characters  @#
  105.      at the end of their dialing string. The "@" command tells the calling
  106.      modem to wait for a period of silence (30 seconds by default). The "#"
  107.      character tells the answering SatisFAXtion board the call is from a
  108.      modem.
  109.  
  110.      Otherwise, if no CNG tone is detected, the SatisFAXtion board will
  111.      assume the call is a voice call and ring the downline phone. If users
  112.      truly need the board to arbitrate between fax and modem calls without
  113.      user intervention, then they must set the SLS setting for "has its own
  114.      phone line".

  116.    NO DIALTONE ON DOWN-LINE PHONE
  117.  
  118.      SatisFAXtion/200, SatisFAXtion/400
  119.      If you get a clicking sound or no dialtone on your down-line phone
  120.      after selecting one of the "Shares phone line" answering options, try
  121.      selecting the answering option "Has own phone line".  If you get a
  122.      dialtone then, check the version number on your DOWNLOAD file. If you
  123.      have a DOWNLOAD.200 version earlier than 2.04 or a DOWNLOAD.400
  124.      version earlier than 3.01, call FaxBACK and order the latest DOWNLOAD
  125.      file for your board.

  142.    TROUBLESHOOTING SEND/RECEIVE PROBLEMS

  144.      If you're having trouble sending or receiving, here are some thing you
  145.      can try:
  146.  
  147.      ■    Always load a disk cache program BEFORE loading CASMGR.
  148.  
  149.      ■    Always load network software BEFORE loading CASMGR and FAXPOP.
  150.  
  151.      ■    Do not load anti-virus software in TSR mode.
  152.  
  153.      ■    If you use the STACKER program to increace your disk storage
  154.           space, always load the STACKER drivers BEFORE loading SATISFAX.SYS
  155.           in your CONFIG.SYS file.
  156.  
  157.      ■    If you use QEMM 6.0, disable the STEALTH feature. Later versions
  158.           may or may not have this STEALTH mode problem fixed.

  160.    V.17 14.4KBPS RECEIVE STATUS REPORT

  162.      For the latest status on the SatisFAXtion Modem/400 high-speed receive
  163.      problem, order FaxBACK document 9983.

  165.    TELENET
  166.  
  167.      Several customers have reported problems using this service. These
  168.      range from locking the system to not being able to connect.
  169.  
  170.      SatisFAXtion/400:
  171.      SatisFAXtion Modem/400 users should use DOWNLOAD.400 version 3.02 or
  172.      higher when calling Telenet.
  173.  
  174.      SatisFAXtion Classic:
  175.      SatisFAXtion users need software version 1.20 to connect to Telenet.
  176.      Also please note that you must type  @  then press ENTER to get the
  177.      Telenet prompt.
  178.  
  179.    CONFIGURING YOUR COMMUNICATIONS SOFTWARE
  180.  
  181.      If your communications software doesn't list your SatisFAXtion
  182.      faxmodem but does list an Intel modem, choose the equivalent Intel
  183.      modem:

  206.      the FaxBACK Communications software Index (document 4351). This index
  207.      will tell you how to find instructions for configuring many popular

  212.      If your communications program doesn't list your Intel modem in the
  213.      setup screen, try selecting a Hayes compatible configuration.  If the
  214.      problem persists, change the "Initialization String" to match your
  215.      modem type:

  226.      You need DOWNLOAD.400 version 3.02 or higher to use Carbon for Windows
  227.      with a SatisFAXtion Modem/400. Earlier versions didn't implement the
  228.      Ring Indicator signal which Carbon Copy uses to detect incoming calls.

  230.    I/O AND IRQ CONFLICTS
  231.  
  232.      When two devices share the same I/O address or IRQ (interrupt), one or
  233.      the other (or both) devices may not work correctly.  To eliminate the
  234.      potential for conflicts, make sure each device you add to your
  235.      computer occupies a unique I/O address and IRQ.

  247.      Intel faxmodems and modems come with a program called TESTCOM.EXE that
  248.      can tell you what I/O address and IRQs are in use. Change to the disk
  249.      or directory containing TESTCOM.EXE and enter this command:  TESTCOM
  250.      /S
  251.  
  252.      If TESTCOM reports that only COM1 is active, set the modem to COM2.
  253.      If TESTCOM reports both COM1 and COM2 active, disable the COM2 port in
  254.      your computer (if possible) so that you can set the modem to COM2.
  255.      See the user's guide for your computer to find out how to disable a
  256.      COM port.

  271.      If you're using both COM1 and COM2 or can't disable COM2, you may be
  272.      able to use COM3 or COM4 depending on the devices attached to COM1 and
  273.      COM2.  A mouse and a modem will not successfully share an IRQ.  A
  274.      printer and a modem sometimes can share an IRQ.
  275.  
  276.      The Intel SatisFAXtion faxmodems, Intel internal 2400 baud modems, and
  277.      the Connection CoProcessor Modem Option allow two additional
  278.      configurations:

  280.      COM3   3E8   IRQ 5  (works in 286/386/486-based (AT) computers)
  281.      COM4   2E8   IRQ 2  (works in 8088/8086-based (PC/XT) computers)
  282.  
  283.      NOTE:      Before configuring your modem for COM3/IRQ 5 or COM4/IRQ 2,
  284.                 make sure your communications software supports these ports.
  285.  
  286.      NOTE:      Never use IRQ 5 in 8088/8086-based computers because IRQ 5
  287.                 is used by your hard drive. Never use IRQ 2 in 286/386/486-
  288.                 based computers because IRQ 2 is used to "cascade" the two
  289.                 interrupt controllers.
