READ AND FILE MAIL UTILILTY DOCUMENTATION FILE
-----------------------------------
This small program is simply used to look at your MAIL / OLDMAIL sub-
directory before you either erase it or archive it and file it away. It will
read all of your messages to the screen in numerical order. On the first line,
the program will display the message name and size. The program will display
1 page of information at a time and wait for a prompt to go to the next
page of messages longer than 23 lines. After each message, it will ask
you if you want to delete the message, rename the message or keep it for
archival or other purposes.
When it reaches the end of the directory it will tell you the total size
of the directory in bytes and ask if you would like to archive the remaining
messages. As written, the program expects you to have the program "PKARC.COM"
in the subdirectory \BBS\PKARC.COM. You can change the path designation in
the source code to however you have your hard disk set up. The program also
expects you to have your bbs operation in a subdirectory called \BBS and that
you have this program in the subdirectory that you are trying to read, such
as \BBS\OLDMAIL\READ-M.EXE.
This program is intended to give the SYSOP a painless way to look at
his .mai files. All you have to do to get it working is to put this compiled
program in your OLDMAIL subdirectory and have the other files and
subdirectories set up as explained above. Then just call it....The program
will do the rest.
When a message has been typed to the screen, the program will pause,
waiting for you to inspect the message. If the message and BBS inserted
information is longer than 23 lines the program will prompt you for the next
page of information until the entire message has been read. When you are
though reading that message, the program will ask if you would like to
delete the message at that point or save till later.
After reading all the messages in the OLDMAIL subdirectory, the program
will show you the total size of the subdirectory and will give you three
options. You can archive the messages (I save a record of all important
messages and third party communications for FCC records), to a file in the
\BBS subdirectory called OLDMAIL.ARC. You can either archive and delete the
messages from the OLDMAIL subdirectory automatically or you can archive and
leave them intact. You also have the option at this point to do nothing and
exit to DOS.
I hope you get some use out of this....Feel free to distribute it to anyone
you want provided you send this documentation file along with it. I am
releasing the source code for this program written in Turbo Pascal 4.0 so I can
make no claims as to the effectiveness of this program on your system or as to
its safety. It is used at WB0OIZ with no ill effects on a 256k Hercules IBM
system.
If you have problems with it, someone has probably modified the source code.
Send me a message in this case and I will send you a new copy direct.
