  2. A new BIOSCI prototype mailing list has been established for
  3. BioThermoKinetics.  The address is

  7. The discussion leader is John Woods (eanv20@castle.edinburgh.ac.uk)
  8. and a description of the newsgroup follows.
  9.

  11. ``The International Study Group for BioThermoKinetics is an informal
  12. group devoted to the quantitative understanding of the kinetics,
  13. thermodynamics and control of biological processes at the cellular
  14. level ... BTK meetings are aimed at providing a forum for a vivid
  15. exchange of ideas between experimenters with a keen eye for
  16. quantitative aspects, theoreticians with a keen eye for the
  17. experimental practice and those in between.'' (Preface, Programme for
  18. 5th BTK meeting) This mailing list is intended to provide not only
  19. some continuity between the biennial meetings but also to serve to
  20. propagate interest in the subjects covered.  Informal participation is
  21. welcomed from all fields (and at all levels), and it is particularly,
  22. but not exclusively, encouraged in the domain of Metabolic Control
  23. Analysis --- the investigation of control in biological systems.

  26. The group will be announced this one time on BIONEWS/bionet.announce
  27. and then further promotion is the discussion leader's responsibility;
  28. the group will not be listed on the BIOSCI info sheet until/unless it
  29. passes a vote for full newsgroup status in six months.

  61. BIOSCI "prototype" newsgroup creation policy

  64. We will be happy to establish and administer a straight *mailing* list
  65. *without* an associated USENET newsgroup for a six month trial period
  66. for anyone that wants to try to form a new electronic community in the
  67. biological sciences (We stress that the topics are limited to
  68. professional communications though.).

  70. The mailing lists will be maintained *initially* only at net.bio.net
  71. instead of at both BIOSCI sites, and will not be added to the BIOSCI
  72. information sheet listing.  It will be the responsibility of the
  73. person who proposes the list to get it up and running within the six
  74. month period.  They will have to handle promotion; our involvement at
  75. BIOSCI at net.bio.net will be limited to creating the list, putting
  76. out one announcement about it, and handling subscription requests.

  78. After six months, the list will be put out for discussion and a vote
  79. according to our procedures for full-fledged newsgroups above (unless
  80. the organizer decides to bow out).  If it passes it will become a
  81. full-fledged BIOSCI newsgroup at both net.bio.net and daresbury.ac.uk
  82. and will also have a parallel USENET newsgroup.  If it fails, the
  83. prototype mailing list at net.bio.net will be shut down.

  85. Note that this service does not preclude people who have an idea that
  86. has widespread appeal from following our current newsgroup creation
  87. policy and going to a vote after a 10 day discussion.
