  2.                    PICK YOUR LD CARRIER ON THE FLY
  3.   
  4.         If you have the new "Equal Access" telephone system you have
  5. the right and opportunity to use any Long Distance carrier when you
  6. make a call, not just the carrier you signed up for.  Below are the
  7. codes to access the LD carriers.
  8.  
  9.         When you place calls on an LD carrier different from your
  10. regular one, the bill will be part of your -local- phone bill rather
  11. than your LD carrier bill.
  12.  
  13.         Using the "Equal Access" system you can take advantage of
  14. EVERY LD carrier's best rates.  Some have better deals calling
  15. overseas than others or calling into certain countries, some have
  16. better deals calling small towns, etc. You can gather the rate
  17. information from the carriers and do what's best for you.
  18.  
  19.         Even if you don't have the rate information this could be a
  20. handy list.  If you ever tried to call LD over Xmas or Xgiving you
  21. know how difficult it can be to get through on holidays.  Using the
  22. list below means that when it's busy on one carrier's lines you can
  23. shift to another carrier and try there.

  25.         Every carrier code begins with a 10.  Two companies have made
  26. it relatively easy to remember them: AT&T is 10 ATT (288) and Sprint
  27. is 10 SPR (777). But remember, these "10 Triple XXX" codes don't work
  28. unless the phone you're calling from is tied to the "Equal-Access"
  29. system.

  31.         Telephone booths?  No harm in trying.  As we know there are
  32. many "telephone companies" formed specifically to prey on people using
  33. unfamiliar phones.  They target the collect-call business at telephone
  34. booths and ALL the phone services in hospital rooms, hotels/motels,
  35. and other places where we make calls in new surroundings.

  37.         Callers assume they are using a major phone carrier and
  38. discover when the bill comes that each local call was $5 and the five
  39. minute LD call back to the office was $20.  The gal with a broken leg
  40. who continues her telephone solicitation for the United Way from her
  41. hospital bed gets home and receives an $800 phone bill not covered by
  42. any insurance.

  44.         And at no time was she advised that her hospital phone service
  45. was being provided -- not by AT&T -- but by Predator Telco, Inc.
  46.  
  47.         This licensing creation of a Republican FCC will be ended when
  48. the FCC has a majority of Democrats but since FCC members don't hold
  49. terms tied to national elections, a switchover takes time.  This list
  50. might help.  You can only try it and see.
