  22. MUTILATED COWS RAISE QUESTIONS, UDDER CHAOS

  27.      Who's killing the cows of Sand Mountain?  Some suspect  
  28. aliens in UFOs.  Some say Satanists.  Or else it's  
  29. government agents swooping down from helicopters for the  
  30. kill.  Or exposure to high-pressure lines.  Or it's cow  
  31. murderers, impure and simple.  Whoever, it's udder chaos up  
  32. here.  As Ted Oliphant said: "There's strange things afoot."  
  33.      Ahoof, too.  Since October, 26 (1992) animals -nearly  
  34. all cows- have been mutilated in several small, rural  
  35. communities in this mountain in northeastern Alabama.  
  36. Nearly all have been killed in the same manner, with  
  37. precise, bloodless, almost high-tech surgical incisions that  
  38. removed various animal parts: tongues, teeth, eyes, ears,  
  39. hearts, and excretory and sexual organs.  
  40.      And when the animals are found in pastures, there are  
  41. no footprints.  No wire tracks.  No trails.  No blood,  
  42. either.  
  43.      "It's pure Sherlock Holmes and one of the weirdest  
  44. cases I've ever seen in my life," said Mr. Oliphant, a Fyffe  
  45. policeman investigating the killings.  "We've got no  
  46. witnesses, no motive, no suspects.  The only thing we got is  
  47. the animals left behind."  
  48.      The mystery is enhanced by two factors: helicopters and  
  49. UFOs.  According to Mr. Oliphant. 95 per cent of the cases  
  50. have involved reports of helicopter sightings, often with  
  51. red, green and white lights or blue and white ones.  Last  
  52. month, Jean Cole, the wife of Albertville Chief Detective  
  53. Tommy Cole saw a copter in their back yard.  She saw four  
  54. men in business suits sitting in it.  When she spied them,  
  55. the copter flew off.  The next day, Det. Cole found a Black  
  56. Angus mutilated, it's sexual organs and rectum removed.  
  57. "I've seen many animals killed by predators, and there's  
  58. always blood around, " he said  
  59.      "I've never seen anything like it.  I don't know what  
  60. it was.  I've been in the business 35 years.  I've had many,  
  61. many dead cows and bulls, but none like that."  
  62.   
  63.      Furthermore, Fyffe is the "UFO Capital of Alabama," as  
  64. proclaimed by the Alabama state Senate in 1989 after several  
  65. UFO sightings that year.  Mr. Oliphant, 33, once a filmaker  
  66. who made a documentary on UFO's, moved here two and a half  
  67. years ago to study this phenomenon.  A year later, he became  
  68. a policeman to better understand the effects of life in he  
  69. UFO Capital of Alabama.  
  70.      Now he is investigating another phenomenon.  Thousands  
  71. of such cow mutilations have occurred across the U.S. since  
  72. 1967.  Linda Louton Howe, a Philadelphia filmaker who made a  
  73. documentary and wrote a book on the subject, arrived in  
  74. Fyffe last weekend with a film crew.  She's convinced that  
  75. aliens are responsible.  
  76.      Margaret Pope agrees.  A calf belonging to the  
  77. Geraldine woman was mutilated earlier this month. At first  
  78. she suspected coyotes.  But not with the calf's udders  
  79. removed.  "Like somebody had sliced it off - a straight cut,  
  80. not like an animal," Mrs Pope said.  There was an incision  
  81. on the left shoulder and a circular cut on the left side of  
  82. the jaw.  The teeth were gone.  
  83.      "There was no sign of a struggle," Mrs Pope said.  "No  
  84. blood, nothing.  Just laying there with it's parts cut out.  
  85. I think it's UFOs, because of lots of lights in the sky, no  
  86. disturbance on the ground.  And the cuts were too precise.  
  87. But you watch who you say [aliens] to.  I don't want to be  
  88. made fun of.  We're not weird.  And this isn't fun."  
  89.      Not for John Strawn of Albertville, who's patrolling  
  90. his land at night to protect his cattle.  "This ol' boy don'  
  91. believe in little green men and flying saucers, because it  
  92. ain't," he said.  "Its strange but it ain't [aliens].  If we  
  93. want to make up stories we can do better than this."  
  94.      "I heard one storythat it was a swamp ape.  I like that  
  95. one pretty good, a lot better than I like aliens.  They  
  96. ain't no aliens piloting these helicopters, I can tell you.  
  97. We got cow murderers over here, thats all there is to it."  
  98.      Mr. Strawn insists he's seen helicopters in pastures at  
  99. night.  Earlier this month, Doug Segers said he saw a  
  100. helicopter forcing his 42 cattle into a corner of his  
  101. pasture.  He was carrying his rifle and when he ran to his  
  102. truck the copter flew off.  
  103.      Who's responsible? Is it merely bovine intervention?  
  104. Another theory: Goverment agents, flying in low-level  
  105. helicopters at night, are killing animals and removing their  
  106. organs to sxtudy the effects (testing for cancer and other  
  107. diseases) on livestock living near high-power lines.  
  108.   
  109.      The most recent mutilation occured Feb 17 (1993), when  
  110. P.T. Williams of Arab found one of his Black Anguscalves  
  111. with its reproductive organs, togue and right eye removed.  
  112.      "I'm not saying there are mutilation cases in this  
  113. county that have not happened," said Jimmy Miller, an  
  114. investigator for the Alabama Department of Agriculture.  
  115. "But what I've seen have not been mutilation cases except  
  116. for Tommy's.  There were bodu parts removed from his that  
  117. could not have ben removed by predators."  
  118.      "Predators don't do this," Mr. Oliphant said.  "And is  
  119. it were a satanic cult they would have used knives and  
  120. there'd be blood.  They'd do it in secrecy and not with  
  121. technology.  Everybody wants me to tell 'em it's a satanic  
  122. cult, because this is the heart of the Bible Belt and they  
  123. want an easy explanation so they can be done with it.  They  
  124. don't want to look at the scientific facts.  The evidence  
  125. doesn't lead to that.  We've got more than one group doing  
  126. this.  We've got the unexplained events, with high  
  127. technology, cauterization of wounds.  And we've got  
  128. something I can't release right now."  
  129.      So the folks on Sand Mountain wait and watch.  Watch  
  130. carefully for close encounters of the herd kind.
