1.3 PC KEYBOARDS
The PC keyboard is similar to a typewriter keyboard, with a
few important differences. The letters, numbers and symbols
are in the standard positions. The numbers on the numeric
keypad are identical to those on the main keyboard and may
be used interchangeably. The <NUMLOCK> key acts like a
<SHIFT LOCK> key for the numeric keypad, and serves to
switch these keys between entering numbers and functioning
as cursor movement keys. The <INS> key and the <DEL> key
enable you to insert and delete characters.
Some commands that are useful for moving around the screen
while entering or editing data are listed below:
COMMAND KEYS FUNCTION
------------ --------
ctrl-e or up arrow move to previous field
ctrl-x or down arrow move to next field
ctrl-s or left arrow move one character to left
ctrl-d or right arrow move one character to right
ctrl-a or home move one word to the right
ctrl-g or del delete character at cursor
backspace delete character to the left
ctrl-t delete word
ctrl-y delete words to the right
ctrl-v or ins toggle INSERT mode
1.4 PRINT SCREEN
You can send an exact image of the screen to the printer by
pressing <SHIFT> and <PRTSC> at the same time. If you use
this command to print a screen containing graphics
characters, these characters may or may not print corerectly
depending on your printer type.
1.5 ENTERING FIELDS
When you are entering data, each field has a maximum
allowable length, indicated by a reverse video box. If you
type fewer characters than the maximum, you must press
<RETURN> or use one of the above mentioned editing commands
to move to the next or previous data item. However, if you
fill the field completely, the program will advance the
cursor to the next field automatically.

1.6 GETTING STARTED
If you are new to PC's and have not read over the previous
section, PC KEYBOARDS, please do so before going any
further.
1.7 BACKUP PC LOG '88
The PC LOG '88 program disk is not copy protected so it can
be backed up easily using the DOS 'diskcopy' command. Once
a backup is made, put the original disk away in a safe
place.
1.8 INSTALLING PC LOG '88
There are distinct differences in the installation for hard
disk and floppy disk configurations. Carefully follow the
directions for your configuration.
It should also be pointed out that PC LOG '88 will run
slower on floppy disk than on a hard disk. The difference
in speed is true for ANYTHING that runs from floppy disk,
not just PC LOG '88.
1.9 HARD DISK INSTALLATION
Create a sub-directory on the hard disk that will contain
the PC LOG '88 files. The following DOS command will create
a sub-directory called LOG.
C> MKDIR LOG <ENTER>
Once the LOG sub-directory has been created, change the current
directory to LOG by entering:
C> CHDIR LOG <ENTER>
Insert the PC LOG '88 Disk in drive A and copy the files to drive
D: by entering:
A> COPY A:*.* <ENTER>
All files will be copied from the PC LOG '88 Disk to the
sub-directory LOG on the hard disk.
1.10 2 360K FLOPPY DRIVE INSTALLATION
Using the DOS FORMAT command, format 2 diskettes and label
one PC LOG '88 PROGRAM DISK and label the other PC LOG '88
DATA DISK. Insert the PC LOG '86 program disk into drive A:
and the newly formatted PROGRAM DISK into drive B:. Use the
*** COPYRIGHT 1988 BROWNING WARE INC. ***
PC LOG '88 USER GUIDE Page 5
DOS COPY command to copy the PC LOG '88 executable file from
drive A: to drive B: by entering the following:
COPY A:PCLOG.EXE B: <ENTER>
Remove the PROGRAM DISK from drive B: and in its place insert
the disk you labeled 'PC LOG '88 DATA DISK'.
Use the DOS COPY command to copy the PC LOG '88
data files from drive A: to drive B: by entering
the following:
COPY A:*.DBF B: <ENTER>
1.11 DOS SETUP
Before PC LOG '88 can be used a CONFIG.SYS file must be
created at the hard disk root ("\") level or on your DOS
floppy disk. The CONFIG.SYS file tells the computer how to
allocate its memory. If a CONFIG.SYS file does not exist,
one can be created as follows:
From the DOS prompt, enter:
COPY CON: CONFIG.SYS <ENTER>
FILES=20 <ENTER>
BUFFERS=16 <ENTER>
Now press the CTRL key and while holding it down, press
the "Z" key. Press RETURN and the following will be
displayed to the screen:
1 file copied
If the CONFIG.SYS file already exists, make sure that the FILES and
BUFFERS entries are at least as large as the above numbers.
Once the CONFIG.SYS file is created or changes have been made
to an existing CONFIG.SYS file, the system must be rebooted
to make the changes effective.
1.12 AUTOEXEC.BAT
Before PC LOG '88 can be used an AUTOEXEC.BAT file must be
created at the hard disk root ("\") level or on your DOS
floppy disk. The AUTOEXEC.BAT file executes automatically
each time your system is booted and can contain one or more
DOS commands to be run in 'batch' mode. (For more on batch
files, see your DOS manual.) If an AUTOEXEC.BAT file does
not exist, creat one as follows:
From the DOS prompt, enter:
*** COPYRIGHT 1988 BROWNING WARE INC. ***
PC LOG '88 USER GUIDE Page 6
COPY CON: AUTOEXEC.BAT <ENTER>
SET LOG=<DRIVE DESIGNATION> <ENTER>
Now press the CTRL key and while holding it down, press
the "Z" key. Press RETURN and the following will be
displayed to the screen:
1 file copied
Replace the <DRIVE DESIGNATION> above with the disk drive
that will contain your DATA FILES.
If you are using a hard disk, the designator will be C: or
D: and for floppy drive configurations, you should
use B:.
If the AUTOEXEC.BAT file already exists, add the above line to it.
Once the AUTOEXEC.BAT file is created or changes have been made
to an existing AUTOEXEC.BAT file, the system must be rebooted
to make the changes effective.

1.28 SYSTEM MAINTENANCE
THE SYSTEM MAINTENANCE MENU is accessed via MAIN MENU option
6. The following SYSTEM MAINTENANCE functions are
available:
1. REINDEX DATABASES
2. BACKUP DATA TO FLOPPIES
3. RESTORE DATA FROM FLOPPIES
4. PACK DATABASES
5. SET TIME ZONE
1.29 REINDEX DATABASE
Occasionally , you may find that the search routines are not
operating correctly. The most probable cause for this is a
damaged index file. This usually results from a crashed
program or illegally exiting PC LOG '88 by turning off your
PC without first exiting the program. If theis should
occur, you must reindex the files by selecting option 1 from
the SYSTEM MAINTENANCE menu. The reindexing function will
take a variable amount of time depending on the number of
records in the file.
1.30 BACKUP DATA FILES
The SYSTEM MAINTENANCE Backup utility uses the DOS backup
command to backup all data base files and their associated
index files. Having backups on hand should you loose a data
file could mean the difference between a few minute restoral
time and several hours to key all your data files back in
manually. Always be sure and have enough FORMATTED
diskettes on hand.
1.31 RESTORE DATA FILES
The RESTORE utility will restore ALL database files and
their associated index files from a particular backup set.
If you know you only need to restore one or two specific
data files use the DOS restore command outside of PC LOG
'88.
1.32 EDIT SYSTEM VARIABLES
There are five system variables used in PC LOG '88. These
variables can be changedvia this menu function. The
following is a description of each one and what it does.

1.33 CALL
This is YOUR call sign as you want it to appear on REPORTS.
1.34 COMPRESS PRINT
This is the code that is used by PC LOG '88 to put your
printer into the COMPRESSED PRINT mode since all reports are
printed in 132 column format. If you are using a 132 column
printer use the code that resets your printer to normal
print (most use '18') for this selection.
1.35 NORMAL PRINT
This is the code that returns your printer to normal mode.
1.36 TIME ZONE
The TIME ZONE variable is used to for conversions from local
time to GMT.
