Please read at least the beginning of SKY47.NEW. This text file
contains update notes for all versions (in reverse chronological
order) including dozens of features not yet included in SKYMAP's
documentation file, SKYMAP.DOC.
You should have a VGA card to run SKYMAP, and the ANSI.SYS device
driver must be named in your CONFIG.SYS file in order to display
SKYMAP's menus:
DEVICE = [path\] ANSI.SYS
Technically, SKYMAP will work with only an EGA card, but it will not
work as well. This is because the graphic cursor reading and writing
is based on 480 vertical pixels, not the 350 of the EGA. Also, screen
graphic text labels will have the wrong aspect ratio on an EGA monitor.
Although a coprocessor is not required to run SKYMAP, it is strongly
recommended since the program is computationally intense. Plots that
take less than 10 seconds with a coprocessor can take SEVERAL MINUTES
without it!
If SKYMAP's star-background title page (complete with meteors and
twinkling stars!) fails to come up after loading your configuration
file, you may have a non-standard video card that SKYMAP can't detect.
If so, contact me and we'll try to come up with a work-around. Mail
can be left for me on Dave Ransom's BBS addressed to "Rob Matson", or
you can call me weekends at (714) 895-3917 (not before 10 am, please--
I'm not a morning person!) Good luck with the program, and happy
satellite hunting!
