It has been asked of me by various ham packeteers on more than a
few occasions,"Why should I take down my XXX PBBS code and run PRMBS?"
Here are but a few of the highlights of the system:
- the only code to support multi-copy/multi-user on a plain vanilla
PC-XT with no expanded RAM - just DoubleDOS.
- the only code which gives the sysop total control of all outbound
actions; that is to say it gives you ctrl-keys to hit to stop downloads,
message reads, message lists, etc., it gives you a key to hit to skip a
bbs in the forward cycle or stop forwarding altogether.
- the first coide to support single message entry to multiple users
on one command line entry, and to support distribution lists.
- it is the only code offer list and read ranges of messages not
being stuck with listing from the top back.
- the only code offering a string_text search through message title
for a particular subject.
- the only code to examine the disk space available from the other
system (if its a PRMBS system) and not try to send a message that would
blow his disk space. It also shuts down the S and U commands when its own
disk space gets too big. All of this rather than crash on a disk full.
- it is the only code supporting use of local favorite editor for
working on messages, plus provides easy command to input the text of any
message into the message as well as any file, or any combination. These
same group of commands allow redisplaying the text typed or yanked in so
far in case it has scrolled off the screen.
- the only code supporting an abort to message entry and upload file.
- it is the only code with a fully integrated message house-keeping
system supporting single keystroke commands to archive (file and kill),
edit the header, edit the text, read, verbose read(view), reply to, etc.
The headers are presented one by one in any order you want, forward or
backward and with any filter you want (i.e. type B only, type T only,
from k1aaa, to k2www, or at k2xxx, etc). Direction of examination can
be reversed and so on. Conservatively speaking this feature reduces the
time spent managing the messages on a large BBS system by 70%.
These are but the highlights of PRMBS. There are hundreds more
features which by themselves mean little but add together to give a
powerful smooth system that's easy for both the user to use and the
sysop to setup and maintain.
