OCR: LUNAR PHASES AT ANY ONE TIME, 50 percent of the Moon's surface is sunlit. The amount of sunlit area we see depends on the Moon's position relative to the Earth and the Sun. The visible area changes in size from none at all, to a full disk, then back again. This sequence has eight stages, called the phases of the Moon. One cycle of phases is completed every 29.53 days. THE CHANGING FACES The top image shows the Moon as seen from the Earth. The image to the right shows the Moon orbiting the Earth. To see each phase, click on the relevant Moon position.
