OCR: IDA, GASPRA, AND TOUTATIS MANY ASTEROIDS can be observed through IDA telescopes. In good viewing conditions, Vesta, the fourth-largest asteroid at 501 km (311 miles) in diameter, is visible even to the naked eye. From the Earth, most asteroids appear as tiny points of light. To be studied in detail, an asteroid must either come relatively close to the Earth or be visited by a space probe. GASPRA RARE VIEWS The first asteroid seen in close-up TOUTATIS was Gaspra, in 1991. To date, the three asteroids shown here are the only ones to have been viewed in such detail. NAMING ASTEROIDS
