OCR: HALLEY'S HISTORY HALLEY'S COMET, the most celebrated and brightest of short-period comets, takes it name from Edmond Halley, who, in 1705, predicted its return in 1758. Halley was one of the first to apply Newton's newly introduced Theory of Universal Gravitation to the calculation of cometary orbits. He found that the bright comets of 1531, 1607, and 1682 had similar orbits, and deduced that they were really the same object. Halley's Comet has been a spectacular object at its every reappearance since 240 BC. The return in 1066 is shown on the Bayeux Tapestry, which depicts the Norman Conquest of England.
