ocr: ALAN GUTH (1947-) ALAN GUTH is an American physicist who suggested a solution to two problems that had been troubling scientists attempting to explain the processes at work in the very young Universe. His ground-breaking theory, first proposed in 1980 and now called the Inflationary Theory, explains how a big bang could produce a universe that would eventually stop expanding, and also produce a uniform microwave background radiation (despite the nonuniformity of matter in the Universe).
