OCR: FRED WHIPPLE FRED LAWRENCE WHIPPLE is an American astronomer who proposed that comets are made of snow, ice, and dust, and that as a comet nears the Sun it produces a tail of gas and dust. His "dirty-snowball" model was shown to be true when the Giotto space probe gave us our first close-up view of a cometary nucleus in 1986. In addition to discovering six comets, Whipple examined the behavior of comets and their relationship with meteors. He also defined the term micrometeorite - a tiny particle of meteoritic material that falls on Earth as a dust particle. (1906-) A-Z SEL LIFE NEXT ALSO STORY
