It was taken to Europe in the early 1500s, and it is now raised in large numbers on both sides of the Atlantic. Turkeys are kept mainly for their meat. Wild turkeys weigh up to 20 pounds (9 kg), domesticated birds can weigh 50 pounds (22.5 kg) or more.
