OCR: OSTRICH EGG N EAR THE MODERN TOWN of Ibiza, on the Iberian island of the same name, lies the ancient Phoenician cemetery of Puig des Molins, where about 4,000 underground tombs have been discovered cut into the rock. Although these tombs have been plundered over the centuries, an enormous number of burial objects has survived. Perhaps the most curious are a number of ostrich eggs dating from the 400s-300s BC. Many are decorated with plant patterns or geometrical shapes, usually in red paint. Some have been cut in half to make bowls, or their top has been removed to form a jar like this one. The ostrich, which is native only to Africa, shows that there was contact between Ibiza and the African continent at that time. SEE ALSO
