Labels:text | screenshot | font OCR: GOULD HUMMINGBIRD T THIS ILLUSTRATION of sword-billed hummingbirds feeding on nectar is by John Gould (1804-81). Gould was a British ornithologist (student of birds). He worked at the Zoological Society of London as a taxidermist, stuffing dead animals to give them a lifelike appearance. Gould wrote many scientific papers on new bird species. He is remembered principally for his beautiful illustrations of birds. His wife Elizabeth helped him in his work by transferring his sketches, using the newly invented lithography process of printing. Gould produced more than 40 volumes containing more than 3,000 plates. With the money that his success brought him, he was able to spend two years in Australia producing his most famous work The Birds of Australia. SEF ALSO
