A totem was a guardian animal, adopted by a family or clan, and used as an individual emblem. A totem pole normally included the owner's totem and was placed in front of the house by the family head or clan chief. The main crest on this totem pole is the supernatural creature Thunderbird, shown above a bear clasping a man. Thunderbird was so-called because the Native Americans believed that he brought thunder and lightning. SEE ALSO
