Inertia, however, tends to make things move in straight lines, so the wheel relies on centripetal forces to hold itself together. Anything that is loosely attached will fly off. The people on a fairground ride, for example, are held on by the centripetal force of the ropes. If one of the ropes were to break, the passenger would fly off at a tangent.
