APAR PJ08730 -
PROBLEM: OS/2 2.1 hangs or traps after LOGO on DISK 1
when installing from a 3.5"/1.44MB floppy drive.
WORKAROUND: Place the files in a different sequence on DISK 1
by making a replacement copy of the disk and using
the replacement to install OS/2.
MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE FOLLOWING DISKETTES:
One 3.5" (1.44) Replacement Disk 1
One 3.5" (1.44) Temporary Disk 1
FOR COMPUTERS WITH ONE 3.5" 1.44MB DRIVE:

COMPLETE THE FOLLOWING STEPS
1) Boot with 3.5" DOS diskette
o Insert DOS Bootable diskette in Drive A:
o Boot system (Ctrl-Alt-Del or Power On Computer)
o Remove DOS diskette from Drive A:
2) MAKING A REPLACEMENT DISK 1
(Insert 3.5" disk in Drive A:)
- At the DOS A> prompt, type:
FORMAT A: /V
- Press ENTER key
- Insert replacement diskette in Drive A:
- Press ENTER key
- When prompted for volume label, type:
DISK 1 (Must have blank space between
DISK and 1)
- Press ENTER key
- When asked if you want to format another, type:
N
- Press ENTER key
- Remove diskette from Drive A:
- Label this diskette REPLACEMENT DISK 1 FOR OS/2 2.1
- Insert DOS diskette in Drive A:
3) MAKE TEMPORARY COPY OF DISK 1
- Make DISKCOPY of ORIGINAL OS/2 2.1 Disk 1 to the
TEMPORARY DISK 1
- At DOS A> prompt, type:
DISKCOPY A: A:
- Press ENTER key
- When prompted to insert SOURCE diskette,
insert the Original OS/2 2.1 Disk 1
- Press ENTER key
- When prompted to insert TARGET diskette,
insert the Temporary Disk 1
- Press ENTER key
- Inserting of SOURCE(ORIGINAL) & TARGET(TEMPORARY)
diskettes may be repeated several times.
- When asked to copy another diskette, type
N
4) Insert TEMPORARY disk in Drive A:
In this step, files on the TEMPORARY DISK 1 (SOURCE) will be
copied to the REPLACEMENT DISK 1 (TARGET)
- Erase Bundle from TEMPORARY DISK 1
- At DOS A> prompt, type:
ERASE BUNDLE
- Press ENTER key
- When prompted to insert disk with
COMMAND.COM in drive A:
Insert DOS diskette in Drive A:
- Press ENTER key
- At the DOS A> prompt, type:
XCOPY A:*.* B: (Note B-drive is a
pseudo drive)
- Press Enter key
- This process will take a lot of time due to the copying
of the diskettes. Many insertions will take place.
- When this above operation has completed,
insert original DISK 1 from OS/2 package:
OS/2 Disk 1 in Drive A:
- At the DOS A> prompt, type:
COPY A:bundle B:
- This time the ORIGINAL OS/2 2.1 DISK 1 is the SOURCE disk
and the REPLACEMENT DISK 1 is the TARGET disk.
5) The REPLACEMENT DISK 1, just created should be used to
install OS/2 2.1. Please KEEP the original DISK 1 that came
with OS/2 2.1 diskettes in a safe place. However, remember
to write an note to use the REPLACEMENT DISK 1 to install
OS/2 2.1. After complete installation, there will not be a need
to keep the TEMPORARY diskette.
FOR COMPUTERS WITH TWO 3.5" 1.44MB DRIVE:

1) Boot with 3.5" DOS diskette
o Insert DOS Bootable diskette in Drive A:
o Boot system (Cntl-Alt-Del or Power on Computer)
o Remove DOS diskette from Drive A:
2) MAKE TEMPORARY COPY OF DISK 1
- Make DISKCOPY of Disk 1
- Insert Original OS/2 2.1 Disk 1 in Drive A:
- Insert TEMPORARY COPY of DISK 1 in Drive B:
- At the DOS A> prompt, type:
DISKCOPY A: B:
- Press ENTER key
- Press Enter Key for any prompt messages for
SOURCE & TARGET diskettes.
- When asked to copy another diskette, type:
N
- Press ENTER key
- Remove TEMPORARY DISK 1 from Drive B:
Label it TEMPORARY COPY of OS/2 2.1 DISK 1
- When prompted to insert disk with
COMMAND.COM in drive A:
Insert DOS diskette in Drive A:
- Press ENTER key
3) MAKE REPLACEMENT DISK 1
- Insert REPLACEMENT DISK 1 into Drive B:
- At DOS A> prompt, type:
FORMAT B: /V
- Press ENTER key
- When prompted for volume label, type:
DISK 1 (Must have blank space between
DISK and 1)
- Press ENTER key
- When asked if you want to format another, type:
N
- Press ENTER key
- Label formatted diskette REPLACEMENT DISK 1 for OS/2 2.1
- Leave REPLACEMENT DISK 1 diskette in Drive B:
- When prompted to insert disk with COMMAND.COM in drive A:
Insert DOS diskette in Drive A:
- Press ENTER key
4). Creating your REPLACEMENT DISK 1
- Insert TEMPORARY OS/2 2.1 DISK 1 diskette in Drive A:
- At the DOS A> prompt, type:
Erase BUNDLE
- Press ENTER key
- At the DOS A> prompt, type:
Copy A:*.* B:
- Press ENTER key
- Insert Original OS/2 DISK 1 in Drive A:
- At the DOS A> prompt, type:
Copy A:bundle B:
- Press ENTER key
- Remove Diskettes from Drive A: & B:
5) The REPLACEMENT DISK 1, just created should be used to
install OS/2 2.1. Please KEEP the original DISK 1 that came
with OS/2 diskettes in a safe place. However, suggested
you write a note to use the REPLACEMENT DISK 1 to install
OS/2 2.1. After installation is completed, there will not be a
need to keep the 3.5" TEMPORARY DISK 1.
