  3. This S3 Display Driver Diskette contains the S3 256 Color Display Driver
  4. and maintenance to OS/2 2.1 that supports this display driver.
  5.  
  6. This README describes a 32-bit "seamless" display driver for the S3**
  7. chip set.  A "seamless" capability allows you to run a Windows** program
  8. in a window on the Presentation Manager* (PM) desktop.
  9.  
  10. This display driver takes advantage of the hardware acceleration
  11. capabilities of the chip sets described in the S3 data books
  12. "86C801/86C805 GUI Accelerators" and "86C928 GUI Accelerator."  It
  13. conforms to the OS/2* 32-bit flat memory model and is designed to
  14. function as a 32-bit PM display driver under the OS/2 32-bit graphics
  15. engine subsystem.

  17. THIS DISPLAY DRIVER IS DESIGNED TO BE USED WITH THE OS/2 2.1 PRODUCT AND
  18. IS GOVERNED BY THE TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF THE OS/2 PROGRAM LICENSE
  19. AGREEMENT.

  21. Supported Features
  22. ------------------
  23. The S3 display driver supports the following resolutions/colors and OS/2
  24. full-screen columns/rows:
  25.  
  26.      640 x  480 x 256 colors
  27.      800 x  600 x 256 colors
  28.     1024 x  768 x 256 colors
  29.     1280 x 1024 x 256 colors  (minimum of 2MB video memory required)
  30.  
  31.     OS/2 full screen 132,25
  32.     OS/2 full screen 132,43

  34. It also supports the following features:
  35.  
  36. *   OS/2 PM Palette Manager
  37. *   Software Motion Video
  38. *   Static mode change
  39.  
  40.  
  41. S3 Display Driver Restrictions
  42. ------------------------------
  43. *   A minimum of 1MB video memory is required.
  44.  
  45. *   This display driver might not support ALL S3 adapters or systems
  46.     with EVERY chip set.
  47.  
  48.     The S3 display driver has been tested on the following S3 adapters
  49.     or systems with the chip set indicated in parentheses:

  66. *  Functional Restrictions
  67.  
  68.    1.  While using WordPerfect** for Windows 5.2 you might find that an
  69.        incorrect font is being selected.  If this occurs:
  70.  
  71.        a. Quit WordPerfect.
  72.  
  73.        b.  Edit the \OS2\MDOS\WINOS2\WIN.INI file using the OS/2 System
  74.            Editor.
  75.  
  76.        c.  Locate the "[font]" section in the file.
  77.  
  78.        d.  Change the entries:
  79.

  87.        e.  Save the file and open WordPerfect.

  89.    2.  A repaint problem may occur when running EXCEL** 4.0 for WINDOWS
  90.        seamlessly.  If this occurs change to full screen.
  91.  
  92.    3.  Action bar pull-downs may be blacked out when multiple WIN-OS2
  93.        seamless applications are launched in separate VDM sessions
  94.        simultaneously.  Launch each application separately or
  95.        simultaneously in the same VDM session.

  98. Installation Instructions
  99. -------------------------
  100. NOTE:  Do NOT install this OS/2 2.1 display driver on earlier versions
  101.        of OS/2.
  102.  
  103.        The OS/2 ATTRIB command is used during installation.  If you
  104.        elected not to install the OS/2 System Utilities or you have
  105.        deleted the ATTRIB command you must use Selective Install to
  106.        restore it before continuing.
  107.  
  108. To install the S3 display driver:
  109.  
  110. 1.  Place this diskette into drive A (or any other diskette drive).
  111.  
  112. 2.  Open an OS/2 full-screen or window session.
  113.  
  114. 3.  At the OS/2 command prompt, enter the following command:
  115.  
  116.             A:S3INST A: C:
  117.  
  118.     where:  A: is the diskette drive
  119.             C: is the startup drive (where OS/2 2.1 is installed)
  120.  
  121.     This command will copy all necessary files to the OS/2 drive.
  122.  
  123. 4.  Perform a shutdown and restart the system.
  124.  
  125. ======================================================================
  126. NOTE:  For PREINSTALLED systems only, omit steps 5 - 8 and perform the
  127.        following steps:
  128.  
  129.        a) Open the Preinstalled Essentials folder.
  130.        b) Open the Configurations Tools folder.
  131.        c) Open the Configure Preinstalled System object.
  132.        d) Change the display setting to SVGA mode.
  133.        e) Perform a shutdown and restart the system.
  134.        f) Open the OS/2 System folder.
  135.        g) Open the System Setup folder.
  136.        h) Open the System object. Select the desired screen
  137.           resolution on the Screen page of the System Settings
  138.           notebook, and then close the notebook.
  139.        i) Perform a shutdown and restart the system.
  140.  
  141. This completes the S3 driver installation for preinstalled systems.
  142. ======================================================================
  143.  
  144. 5.  Open an OS/2 full-screen or window session.
  145.  
  146. 6.  Run the Display Driver Installation (DSPINSTL) utility program.
  147.  
  148.     When the Display Driver Install window appears, S3 should be the
  149.     default choice.  (To confirm this default, check the Primary Display
  150.     check box and select OK.  This will display a pop-up window
  151.     indicating the choices for the Super Video Graphics Array.  S3
  152.     should be highlighted.)
  153.  
  154.     After a moment, you will be asked to accept the preselected Install
  155.     Using Defaults option or to select the Install Using Display Adapter
  156.     Utility Program option.
  157.  
  158.     If you select the Install Using Display Adapter Utility Program
  159.     option, follow the instructions for running the program.
  160.  
  161.     You will be prompted to insert the source directory (S3-256
  162.     diskette).  Insert the diskette and select OK again.
  163.  
  164.     DSPINSTL determines the hardware configuration by creating the
  165.     SVGADATA.PMI file on the startup drive where the OS2 directory is
  166.     located.  If this file has not been created, the adapter will not be
  167.     supported.
  168.  
  169. 7.  When DSPINSTL has completed, open the OS/2 System folder, open the
  170.     System Setup folder, and then open the System object.  The Screen
  171.     page of the Settings notebook will list all the supported
  172.     resolutions for your configuration.  Select one and then close the
  173.     notebook.

  175. 8.  Perform a shutdown and restart the system.
  176.

  178. New SETVGA Procedure
  179. --------------------
  180. Use the following procedure instead of the SETVGA command if it is
  181. necessary for you to return to VGA mode.  If your display is out of sync
  182. you can follow this procedure after starting OS/2 from the Installation
  183. Diskette and escaping to the command prompt.
  184.  
  185. Case 1: You installed OS/2 from diskettes
  186.  
  187. 1.  Be sure RSPDSPI.EXE is in the \OS2\INSTALL\ directory.  If it is, go
  188.     to step 2.  If it is not, insert Installation Diskette 8 and unpack
  189.     RSPDSPI.EXE with the following command:
  190.  
  191.     C:\OS2\UNPACK A:\INSTAID C: /N:RSPDSPI.EXE
  192.  
  193.     where:  A: is the drive containing Installation Diskette 8
  194.             C: is the startup drive (where OS/2 2.1 is installed)
  195.  
  196. 2.  Enter the following commands:
  197.  
  198.     C:
  199.     CD C:\OS2\INSTALL
  200.     RSPDSPI /PK:VGA /SK:NONE /S:A:\ /T:C:

  202.     where:  A: is the diskette drive you use to install OS/2
  203.             C: is the startup drive (where OS/2 2.1 is installed)

  206. Case 2: You installed OS/2 from CD-ROM or a LAN
  207.  
  208. 1.  Be sure RSPDSPI.EXE is in the \OS2\INSTALL\ directory.  If it is, go
  209.     to step 2.  If it is not, unpack RSPDSPI.EXE with the following
  210.     command:

  212.     C:\OS2\UNPACK E:\DISK_8\INSTAID C: /N:RSPDSPI.EXE

  214.     where:  E: is the CD-ROM or LAN drive
  215.             C: is the startup drive (where OS/2 2.1 is installed)
