This project requires three different dye colours. We'll be using Brown MX2BR, Red
--- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
MX5 and Yellow MXRA. These dyes will result in great Autumn-toned fabrics, but you
--- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
can choose any colours you want. You'll also need empty pots to measure and
--- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
dissolve the dye into, measuring spoons or a scale to measure the dye, dust mask,
--- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
gloves and protective clothing, a spare piece of fabric to protect the surface you are
--- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
using and to catch loose dry dye, a jug with 50g of soda ash, a jug of hot water to
--- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
dissolve and dilute the dye and soda ash, a container to put the fabric in to dye, as
--- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
well as three 1/2m pieces of fabric. This technique is ideal for an upright container,
--- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
but you can use a tray or my preferred container is a wallpaper trough. You can
--- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
manipulate the fabric lots of different ways in a wallpaper trough and get some
--- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
spectacular results. We are aiming for the different dyes to leak onto the fabrics next
--- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
to them, which will result in some unusual and unrepeatable colour mixes and
--- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
patterns.
--- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
Use some of the hot water to dissolve the soda ash. I have used approximately 3
--- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
cups of water to do this. There are 3 pieces of fabric and a cup of soda water for each
--- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
one will be enough liquid for the purposes of getting the dyes to migrate. We will be
--- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
using the 'Slow and Comfortable method' of dyeing, method 2, for this project.
--- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
Using the scale or the conversion chart, measure 3g of dye into each container. Be
--- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
sure to use your dust mask for protection. Use the water to dissolve the dye powder.
--- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
Put the lid on the containers and shake to ensure all the dye has dissolved. Set these
--- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
aside. Wipe the work surface with the extra piece of fabric to catch all the loose dye
--- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
powder.
--- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
Adding the dye to the fabric is always my most favourite part. Take the first piece of
--- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
fabric and put it into the dyeing container. Press it down to the bottom. Take the first
--- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
dye - I've used the darkest one, the brown - and pour it over the fabric. Now squish it
--- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
all around to make sure there are no white bits left. We don't want any white bits.
--- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
Take the soda ash solution and pour 1/3 of it onto the fabric. Squish it all about
--- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
again to make sure that the soda solution spreads fairly well through the entire ball
--- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
of fabric. Repeat this procedure with the next colour. I've used the yellow next. Add
--- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
the soda ash solution and squish well to get the colour and soda evenly distributed
--- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
again. At this point, you will also notice some colour mixing. This is good. Now add
--- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
the last colour, the red, and use the last of the soda ash. Notice how the soda ash
--- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
carries and distributes the different colours from the top to the bottom.
