This is a quick and easy way to get spectacular results with very little effort. We'll use
--- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
the second method of dyeing (see 'Different Dye Methods') the Slow and
--- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
Comfortable method. In this particular exercise we will be using up dye left over
--- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
from dyeing the graduations. But you can start fresh with greater concentrates of
--- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
dye of different colours to get different effects. All you need for this exercise is a kitty
--- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
litter tray, fabric, dye, soda ash and warm water.
--- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
You can use the fabric wet or dry, it doesn't matter. Try both as you will get different
--- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
effects. The water can act as a resist and exclude dye from parts of the fabric. It can
--- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
also help the capillary action of fluid and give a smooth edge to the colours. Dry
--- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
fabric will take up more liquid so is less likely to get white patches, but will also have
--- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
sharper definition in the crinkles. Place it in the tray. For more spectacular effects try
--- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
to wrinkle it up as much as you can. Take the leftover dye, or dye that you have
--- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
prepared and dissolved, and pour it over the fabric in patches. As you keep adding
--- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
more dye, try to place it so that the colours merge and form secondary colours, and
--- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
take up any white patches. Keep going until all of the white and dye are used up.
--- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
Press down with your gloved hands to exclude any air bubbles and to squish dye
--- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
into the bottom. Lift up a corner to check that the dye has worked its way through.
--- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
Now, dissolve the required amount of soda ash (see 'Basic Dye Recipe') in hot water
--- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
and pour directly over the top of the fabric. Leave to sit for at least 4 hours and up to
--- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
24 hours and then rinse in cold water, wash in hot water with Synthropol SP or a
--- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
good washing powder, rinse again in cold until there is no dye run-off. This piece of
--- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
fabric is very pale. Imagine if you used more concentrated dyes. Wow. My favourite
--- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
colours for this exercise are red and green.
