  4.               SOFTWARE MAKES A COMPUTER TICK - ONE BYTE AT A TIME 
  5.

  8.        This section has been revised to include a larger list of 
  9.        shareware disk vendors at the end of this tutorial...

  11.        With so much software in the marketplace sometimes the hardest 
  12.        job is to select from overabundance and arrive at genuinely 
  13.        useful programs. Software is available in three basic flavors: 
  14.        COMMERCIAL, PUBLIC DOMAIN and SHAREWARE. 
  15.  
  16.        Commercial software is sold by mail or through retail outlets 
  17.        and is generally protected by both legitimate and stringent 
  18.        copyright laws. Commercial software may in addition be copy-
  19.        protected (difficult or impossible to make spare disk copies) or 
  20.        non-copy protected (can be copied to another disk for safe-
  21.        keeping or archival purposes.) Commercial software is usually of 
  22.        good quality and can range in price from 10 dollars to several 
  23.        hundred dollars or more.

  25.        For the first time computer user, an outstanding commercial 
  26.        package which includes a robust word processor, excellent 
  27.        spreadsheet, database, modem package, macros, tutorials, spell 
  28.        checker, macros, thesaurus and other features is Microsoft 
  29.        Works. Retailing for about $100, it represents value for a 
  30.        beginner and may be the only package needed for a home office, 
  31.        small business or hobbyist.

  33.        Public domain software represents computer programs which have 
  34.        been released into the public domain, do not require payment or 
  35.        registration fees to the author, and are frequently available 
  36.        from computer clubs, some libraries, and modem BBS telephone 
  37.        systems. PC Magazine utilities are examples of public domain 
  38.        software. 
  39.  
  40.        Shareware, a third area of software interest represents programs 
  41.        whose author(s) request a donation or registration but are 
  42.        otherwise available in much the same manner as public domain 
  43.        software. Frequently "enticements" such as a documentation 
  44.        manual of program instructions, an upgrade disk or other bonus 
  45.        offer is made within the program to secure a registration fee. 
  46.        An example of shareware is this software program, PC-LEARN. 
  47.  
  48.        Which type of software is best? Probably a little of each, to be 
  49.        honest. Many people find that starting with several affordable 
  50.        commercial programs (to ensure fast, productive results) and 
  51.        then sampling shareware over time (to continue trying new 
  52.        software) to be of value. Other computer owners find that 
  53.        starting with shareware and public domain software (to get a 
  54.        broad sampling of software variety at little cost) and then 
  55.        buying additional commercial programs as sophisticated needs 
  56.        grow also to be useful.

  60.                        UTILITIES ADD POWER TO COMPUTING 
  61.

  64.        We have discussed larger application software packages such as 
  65.        spreadsheets, word processing packages and databases elsewhere 
  66.        within PC-LEARN, but UTILITY software packages are an area of 
  67.        software productivity which every beginner should investigate. 
  68.        What are utilities? Software programs which augment computing 
  69.        capabilities, manage files, backup data, provide calculators, 
  70.        recover files from disaster, transfer files between computers 
  71.        and thousands of other "small essential jobs." A few of the top 
  72.        utility packages include the following. 
  73.  
  74.        PC TOOLS DELUXE. The quintessential toolkit of goodies DOS 
  75.        forgot to include. PC Tools contains a superb DOS shell for file 
  76.        management, a miniature database, file transfer utility, 
  77.        calculator, backup system, unerase data restorer, disk repair 
  78.        capability, security file wiper and literally dozens of other 
  79.        useful one-of-a-kind goodies. If you can only afford one 
  80.        utility, PC Tools Deluxe is it. 
  81.  
  82.        THE PC MAGAZINE UTILITIES are continuing classics and favorites 
  83.        of many users. Available through most computer clubs and by 
  84.        modem from local BBS sources and PC Magazine as disk bonus 
  85.        offers when you subscribe to that periodical. An index to PC 
  86.        Magazine utilities is maintained through their on line PcMagnet 
  87.        modem service which can be reached by following printed 
  88.        instructions contained in every issue of PC Magazine. The 
  89.        utilities are in the public domain and generally available at no 
  90.        charge beyond a small disk copying or distribution fee. 
  91.        Most shareware distributors carry disk sets of the PC Magazine
  92.        utilities.

  94.        LABELPRO prepares labels and address stickers better than any 
  95.        competing program. Prepare nametags, casette tape labels, 
  96.        address stickers with ease. 
  97.  
  98.        HOTLINE allows you to manage, search, sort and DIAL phone 
  99.        directory databases. A grownup electronic rolodex system which 
  100.        works better than any other program of this type. 
  101.  
  102.        BROOKLYN BRIDGE & DESKLINK allow transfer of files between 
  103.        computers via a cable connector and facilitate the transfer 
  104.        between desktop and laptop computers with ease. 
  105.  
  106.        KEYWORKS & NEWKEY are universal keyboard macro programs which 
  107.        issue a burst of keystrokes when you press only one or two keys. 
  108.        ESSENTIAL for all beginners to learn and use! NEWKEY is 
  109.        shareware. 
  110.  
  111.        CHECK-IT & SYSTEM SLEUTH perform diagnostic tests to tell your 
  112.        what connections, cables, ports disk drives and components are 
  113.        working and why. You can locate bad memory chips and in general 
  114.        save time and frustration tracking down problems. 
  115.  
  116.        QEMM-386 & 386MAX manage vast areas of RAM memory in 80386 
  117.        equipped computers. These can convert extended memory to 
  118.        expanded memory, move device drivers and terminate and stay 
  119.        resident programs efficiently, and remap BIOS and graphics video 
  120.        into faster RAM area memory. Subtle programs which help manage 
  121.        memory on more powerful DOS machines.

  123.        MARK/RELEASE is a small program whose sole function is to 
  124.        install and remove TSR programs such as popup calculators, 
  125.        address books and others for minimum memory crowding and 
  126.        conflict. Shareware.

  128.        FASTBACK PLUS allows reliable and quick backup of essential hard 
  129.        disk files to floppy disks and tape backup systems. A variety of 
  130.        options allows selective backup by date, data and file type. 
  131.  
  132.        SUPER PC-KWIK provides a fast disk cache buffer system that 
  133.        speed processing and convenience for hard disk users. Speed is 
  134.        always a convenience when using a hard drive and SUPER PC-KWIK 
  135.        is the champion disk cache software utility. 
  136.  
  137.        PKZIP is a unique shareware program which compresses files up to 
  138.        80% smaller in size! This frees up disk space on your hard drive 
  139.        and also allows faster file transfers when using a modem. PKZIP 
  140.        is as standard as DOS and almost as essential.

  142.        FASTTRAX is a disk optimizer and file defragmenter whose sole 
  143.        job is to periodically assemble files into efficient contiguous 
  144.        sectors on a disk for speedy performance. A routine housekeeping 
  145.        function no disk drive owner can neglect.

  147.        SCAN & CLEANUP are virus/trojan horse detection and erradication 
  148.        programs which are probably the best of the bunch.

  150.        CED & PCED & LIST are utilities which browse files (list) and 
  151.        provide command line editing functions (CED and PCED) which are 
  152.        far superior to the functions DOS provides. All are shareware.

  154.        HOT SHOT GRAPHICS & PIZAZZ PLUS function to capture screen 
  155.        graphics to transfer them to another software program for 
  156.        presentation or publication use.

  158.        GRAPHICS LINK PLUS facilitates the conversion of graphics 
  159.        picture files between varying software packages. 
  160.  
  161.        TYPEFAST resets the keyboard rate of your system so you can 
  162.        (good guess) type fast! Public domain utility from PC Magazine. 
  163.  
  164.        PRINTCACHE is a print spooler. You can thus dump your document 
  165.        file out to the printer and within a split second come back to 
  166.        your program and keep working rather than sit there for 30 
  167.        minutes as your printer hogs the PC. 
  168.  
  169.        ULTRAVISION adjusts cursor size and provides many differing 
  170.        typefaces on your screen if you don't care for the ones which 
  171.        came with your software or PC. 
  172.  
  173.        MAGELLAN The ultimate text search utility. Search an entire hard 
  174.        disk quickly for the file that contains the phrase "swimming 
  175.        pool budget for Mr. Davis" or other search idea. Great for 
  176.        locating that document when piles of files seem lost on your 
  177.        hard drive. 
  178.  
  179.        VGA DIMMER screen dimmer program to prevent phosphor burnout 
  180.        from leaving screen on and unattended for long periods of time. 
  181.        Works automatically. 
  182.  
  183.        GRANDVIEW The best of the outliner programs. When you need to 
  184.        assemble, sort and prioritze tasks or documents Grandview is it. 
  185.  
  186.        SOFTWARE BRIDGE & WORD FOR WORD PROFESSIONAL allow different 
  187.        word processing programs to swap documents in different file 
  188.        formats. Great for the office where each person uses a different 
  189.        word processing package.

  193.                         BACK TO SHAREWARE FOR A MOMENT

  197.        Let's look for a moment at the wellspring of shareware resources 
  198.        that run well beneath the surface of the conventional computer 
  199.        landscape. You do not have to be a hobbyist, hacker or computer 
  200.        guru to utilize shareware and public domain software. A short 
  201.        list of shareware distributors follows this section.
  202.  
  203.        Membership in a local computer club or user group is one way 
  204.        to obtain shareware. Many retail software and computer 
  205.        equipment stores maintain lists of local clubs. 
  206.        
  207.        Frequently a local and friendly Radio Shack salesman can give 
  208.        you a clue as to computer clubs. The clubs frequently augment 
  209.        club treasuries by sale of shareware disks. Membership with many 
  210.        clubs is optional - purchasing a shareware disk is convenient 
  211.        whether you are a member or not. Disk distribution or copying 
  212.        may fees hover around $3 to $5. 
  213.  
  214.        A second, perhaps more convenient source for some people, is 
  215.        mail order sources of shareware, otherwise known as shareware 
  216.        distributors. A list of several shareware sources is provided 
  217.        at the end of this tutorial. 
  218.  
  219.        A third avenue for locating shareware is either a BBS computer 
  220.        system (a computer in someone's home or office hooked by modem 
  221.        to telephone lines) or the larger commercial on-line services 
  222.        such as Compuserve, The Source and BIX. These larger commercial 
  223.        services can be the fastest way to locate and obtain shareware. 
  224.        The on-line modem route has the additional advantage that 
  225.        shareware can be located by electronic search/sort which 
  226.        certainly speeds up the process. Cost is obviously a factor. 
  227.        With a local BBS service the cost is simply that of a local 
  228.        phone call. Commercial services generally charge by the minute 
  229.        or hour and sometimes also involve long distance charges if a 
  230.        local line is not available. 
  231.  
  232.        Next a list of popular mail order shareware distributors not to 
  233.        be confused with mail order software distributors of commercial 
  234.        software. Contact them and request a free catalog - you will 
  235.        be surprised at the depth and variety of shareware offerings. 
  236.        
  237.        As an example, this disk, PC-LEARN, is a shareware program 
  238.        carried by PC-SIG and many other shareware distributors. By 
  239.        the way, a shareware distributor usually charges a nominal fee 
  240.        ($2 to $5) to copy and DISTRIBUTE a disk to you. If you find the 
  241.        shareware useful, you are encouraged to send the author of the 
  242.        package a final REGISTRATION FEE ($10 to $50 approximately) to 
  243.        use the package and receive updated copies, instruction manuals 
  244.        or bonus items to thank you for the courtesy of registering. 
  245.        Shareware is an honor system. The distributors make money charging 
  246.        a fee for a sample disk, but the author also deserves a registration 
  247.        fee if you find the shareware useful.
