What is Outcome-Based Education?
Many people may not be familiar with the relatively new term
"Outcome-Based Education" (OBE). STUDENT SKILLS POWER was
developed to help ease the increased work load Outcome-Based
Education will bring.
The Minnesota State Department of Education has adopted the
following definition of Outcome-Based Education (1991):
Education that is outcome-based is a learner-centered, results-
oriented system founded on the belief that all individuals can
learn. In this system:
1) What is to be learned is clearly identified;
2) Learner's progress is based on demonstrated achievement;
3) Multiple instructional and assessment strategies are
available to meet the needs of each learner;
4) Time and assistance are provided for each learner to
reach maximum potential.
Outcome-Based Education is one method for obtaining greater
accountability from teachers for their students' academic
achievement. The Minnesota State Department of Education has
issued a state mandate that all K-12 public schools across the
state must implement outcome-based curriculum by 1995. Other
states are either considering or legislating "Outcome-Based
Education."
Clearly, OBE requires more teacher time and effort than
conventional instruction. OBE requires the teacher to continually
monitor each student's work, determine what skills and tasks
(outcomes) each student has mastered, and provide immediate
feedback. Teachers will be required to further individualize their
instruction, create and administer an assortment of assessment
tools, and keep extensive records of each student's progress.
STUDENT SKILLS POWER from WISCO Computing has been designed to help
keep these extensive student records.

STUDENT SKILLS POWER MANUAL
Chapter 1 - GENERAL INFORMATION
1-0 INTRODUCTION
STUDENT SKILLS POWER is NOT a normal grade book program. This
program does not grade students. STUDENT SKILLS POWER is a teacher
developed database that can be used as an alternative or a supple-
ment to a regular grading program. This program was designed
specifically for Outcome-Based Education. Skills (or the educa-
tional term Outcomes) are entered in different skill groups (for
example, math, science, reading, etc.). Reports are created
listing different skills your students have achieved, and skills
the students are still trying to learn. Administrative summaries
include totals of all skills the students have achieved. Reports
can be quickly printed listing over 1100 skills to be learned
during the school year.
STUDENT SKILLS POWER can be used by both elementary and secondary
teachers. Elementary teachers divide skills into groups based on
the subject matter (for example, math, science, reading, etc.).
Secondary teachers divide skills into groups based on their units.
For example, an earth science teacher could have groups called
rocks and minerals, weathering and erosion, rivers, ground water,
glaciers, volcanoes and plate tectonics, weather, oceanography,
and astronomy.
This program allows up to 75 skills listed in each of 15 skill
groups. Up to 15 classes (groups of students) can use the same
set of skills.
STUDENT SKILLS POWER can keep up-to-the-minute information for all
students. The program prepares, prints and stores information
necessary to produce comprehensive reports. You will save hours of
your time usually spent preparing for conferences, for preparing
reports for parents, and completing reports for administrators.
STUDENT SKILLS POWER is specifically designed to be simple to
understand and easy to use. The seven menus allow easy movement
through the program so you can begin recording student skills in
just a few minutes.

Chapter 1 - GENERAL INFORMATION
If your computer system does not have a hard drive (called a fixed
drive by IBM), follow instructions 6-8 to make a working copy of
the STUDENT SKILLS POWER program.
Follow instructions 1-5 to copy the STUDENT SKILLS POWER program
to the hard disk.
1. Make a new subdirectory (for example MD GRS) for the STUDENT
SKILLS POWER program. This is done by typing MD GRS (this
means Make Directory GRS).
2. Copy all files from the distribution diskette to this new
subdirectory (for example COPY A:*.* C:\GRS).
3. Make another subdirectory (for example MD GSBACKUP). This is
done by typing MD GSBACKUP This subdirectory should be used
to keep a back up copy of your student data.
4. Decide where you are going to keep your student data and a back
up copy of your data. Each choice has some advantages and some
disadvantages.
a. On a floppy diskette - (either A: or B:) - best
recommendation. You would keep a back up of your student
data in the C:\GSBACKUP subdirectory
b. In another subdirectory on your hard drive. If you make
this choice, you should make another subdirectory now (for
example type MD GSDATA) You would keep a back up of your
data on a separate diskette in either drive A: or B:
c. In the same subdirectory as the program. You would keep a
back up of your student data on a separate diskette inserted
in either drive A: or B:
5. Go on to Section 1-5 Starting a New School Year.
Follow instructions 6-8 to make a working copy the STUDENT SKILLS
POWER program if your computer does not have a hard disk and you
are using two floppy drives.
6. You will need 3 blank formatted diskettes. One disk will keep
a copy of the master program. This diskette will be called the
program diskette. The second diskette will be used to keep the
student data. The third diskette will be used to keep a backup
copy of the student data.
7. If your program diskette was formatted with the command
parameter /S a copy the file COMMAND.COM from your DOS
diskette was placed on the program diskette. If COMMAND.COM is
not on your program diskette, you should copy it from your DOS
diskette to your program diskette. Refer to your DOS manual.
Page 9
STUDENT SKILLS POWER MANUAL
Chapter 1 - GENERAL INFORMATION
8. Place the master distribution diskette in drive A:. Place your
program diskette in drive B:. To copy the files from the
master distribution diskette to your program diskette use the
COPY command (for example COPY A:*.* B:). The order of the
letters is very important. The first letter (A:) always refers
to the source, (in this case the master diskette), and the
second letter the target (in this case the program diskette).
When you have completed this step, place the master diskette in
a safe place, move the program diskette to drive A:, and place
one of the blank formatted diskette in drive B:. On a two
drive system, the program is usually placed in drive A:. The
student data diskette is usually placed in drive B:.
1-5 STARTING A NEW SCHOOL YEAR
If the program was copied to the hard disk drive as explained in
the last section, change to the STUDENT SKILLS POWER program
subdirectory by typing CD GRS The CD stands for Change Directory.
If you decided to keep your student data on a floppy diskette,
place the blank formatted student data diskette in the appropriate
disk drive.
Type SKILLS /INSTALL and press the Enter key to start STUDENT
SKILLS POWER for the new school year.
You will be asked 4 questions so the correct file structure can be
determined.
1. Enter the letter of the disk drive (and optional subdirectory)
to be used for saving your data. If you are saving your
student data on a floppy diskette, you should enter either A:\
or B:\ and press the Enter key. If you are storing your data
in a hard drive subdirectory, you should enter the drive letter
and subdirectory (for example C:\GSDATA)
2. This question asks for the current school year. Enter a year
in the format 1992-93. This information is needed for
displaying the proper 6 month calendar when the F2 function key
is pressed and for determining attendance information.
3. This question asks for the number of terms per semester. Many
schools use two-9 week quarters (terms) per semester. Other
school districts (corporations) use three-6 week terms per
semester. In STUDENT SKILLS POWER, term and quarter are
defined as a part of a semester. However, the correct number
(either 2 or 3) is needed so the correct number of empty files
are created for recording attendance.
Page 10
STUDENT SKILLS POWER MANUAL
Chapter 1 - GENERAL INFORMATION
4. This question asks the starting quarter (term) number. If you
are beginning the program at the start of the school year, you
would answer 1. Teachers starting the second semester would
answer either 3 or 4, depending on the number of terms per
semester.
After these four questions are answered, two files are created.
The file SKILLS.DRV will be created on the program diskette or
program subdirectory of the hard disk. SKILLS.DRV contains the
drive letter (and subdirectory) of your student data.
The file SKILLS.CNF will be created on your data diskette or in the
student data subdirectory of your hard disk. SKILLS.CNF contains
your class names, printer codes, teacher name, school name, and
other settings used by the program. Since you haven't entered
your skill group names, class names or other information, the
information will either be blank, or contain default (startup)
settings.
Press any key to remove the copyright screen. The MENU BAR will
be displayed at the top of the screen. Use the right arrow key
or press Alt-S to go immediately to the SET UP MENU. Enter
information such as teacher's name, school name, printer, etc.
Additional information can be entered with the Change Miscellaneous
Sub-Menu of this Menu. If changes are not made, the default
(startup) settings will be used. The default settings and values
are listed and explained in Chapter 2 - SET UP MENU.
After entering the appropriate information, select Save the
Displayed Information on the SET UP MENU, and press the Enter key.
The information is kept in the file SKILLS.CNF on the student data
diskette (or the student data subdirectory).
In the future, you will start STUDENT SKILLS POWER by entering the
command SKILLS at the appropriate DOS prompt. If the program is
stored on the hard disk, you will have to enter CD GRS and press
the Enter key before entering the command SKILLS
Other Startup options are explained in Chapter 8 - Miscellaneous.

1-6 THE MENU BAR
STUDENT SKILLS POWER contains 7 menus. Each menu name is displayed
in the MENU BAR at the top of the display screen. Each menu is
explained in the rest of this manual.
1. OUTCOMES - Record and Print Out Student Skills
2. ATTENDANCE - Record and Print Out Student Absences
3. GROUPS - Record Skill Text for Different Skill Areas
4. NAMES - Entering Class and Student Information
5. SET UP - Initial Set Up Information Used by your Classes
6. EXTRA - Miscellaneous Printer and Diskette Services
7. QUIT - The only way to leave STUDENT SKILLS POWER
The SEVEN menus of STUDENT SKILLS POWER allow easy movement through
the program. The MENU BAR at the top of the screen serves as the
center of this program. Each menu is accessed by making selections
at the MENU BAR.
You can select a Menu from the MENU BAR by:
1. Using the left or right arrow keys,
2. Holding down the alternate key and pressing the first letter
of the menu name, or
3. Placing the mouse cursor on top of the menu name and pressing
the left button of the mouse.
QUIT on the far right of the MENU BAR is the only way to leave
STUDENT SKILLS POWER. Leaving the program with this selection
insures that all student data has been safely saved on diskette.
Choices are listed below each menu. Select a choice by:
1. Using the up or down arrow keys,
2. Pressing the first letter of the choice, or
3. Placing the mouse cursor on top of the choice name, then
pressing the left button of the mouse.
Choices that are displayed in red letters on a white background,
or with a bullet to the left of the choice can not be selected.
If you have trouble seeing the menu choices, press Alt-B for a
black/white monochrome display or Alt-C for color display. The
black/white display may be necessary for some lap-top computers.

2-1 CURRENT QUARTER (TERM) NUMBER
When STUDENT SKILLS POWER was started for a new school year
(chapter 1-5), the fourth question asked for the starting term
number. To change terms, enter a number between 1 and 6. Some
schools divide the school year into 6-six week terms and others
use 4-nine week quarters. In this program, term and quarter have
the same meaning. Term and semester numbers are used for
recording attendance information.
You can always return to a previous quarter (term) to change or
update a student's attendance information. Then change the
quarter (term) number back to the current quarter. Then save
these settings. The program makes faster calculations by using
subtotals.
2-2 PRINT PARENT SIGNATURE REQUEST
There may be times when you want to send individual student reports
home for parent signatures. Enter Y for Yes or N for No to print
the parent signature request.
2-3 REVISE/REVIEW COMMON MESSAGE ON INDIVIDUAL REPORTS
Messages might ask parents to call the school if they have any
questions. The message can be up to 10 lines long. A student
message could be a reminder that a book report, etc is due.
Pressing the F1 function key displays a help screen for editing
lines of the common message. The edit help screen can be
displayed through out the program to help edit text information.
Page 13

Chapter 2 - SET UP MENU
After editing the last line, press the Enter key to have the
displayed information replace the information in the SKILLS.CNF
file. Then press the Escape key.
The letter Y must also be entered on the next selection of this
menu for this common message to be printed.
2-4 PRINT COMMON MESSAGE ON INDIVIDUAL REPORTS
The common message entered with the above menu selection can be
printed on individual reports by answering Y for Yes or N for No.
2-5 TEACHER'S NAME TO BE PRINTED ON REPORTS
The teacher's name is included on most print outs.
2-6 SCHOOL'S NAME TO BE PRINTED ON REPORTS
The school's name is included on many print outs.
2-7 SCHOOL'S TELEPHONE NUMBER TO BE PRINTED ON REPORTS
The school's telephone number is included on many print outs.
2-8 NUMBER OF GRADING TERMS PER SEMESTER
Enter the number of terms each semester. Semesters usually contain
two-9 week quarters or three-6 week grading terms per semester. The
number of grading terms is used for recording attendance
information.
2-9 SELECTING A PRINTER
The following printers are supported by STUDENT SKILLS POWER.
Others may have been added after this manual was printed.
Epson FX or Epson LQ Okidata
IBM Proprinter Panasonic KX P1091i
Toshiba P1351 HP LaserJet/DeskJet
Diablo 630 User Defined
After selecting a printer, you will be asked if the printer status
should be ignored. STUDENT SKILLS POWER always checks the status
of the parallel printer port before sending any data. This
normally works quite well.
Page 14
STUDENT SKILLS POWER MANUAL
Chapter 2 - SET UP MENU
You may experience problems if you map a parallel port to a serial
one by the MODE command, or if you have a non-standard, or very
fast computer. The program might actually think that your printer
port (LPT1:) is busy when you know it is not. If you have printer
problems like this, select Y for Yes to ignore the printer status.
Laser printers always ignore the printer status. To use a printer
not listed or not compatible with the displayed list of printers,
select a user-defined printer. If a user-defined printer is
selected, the printer codes from your printer manual must be
entered.
2-10 CHANGE MISCELLANEOUS SETTINGS - SUB-MENU
When this selection is made, another screen of settings is
displayed. Use the up and down arrows to move between settings.
These settings further customize STUDENT SKILLS POWER. Press the
letter Y for Yes or N for No. The program ignores any settings
that do not apply to your equipment. Press Escape when you have
finished making these settings.
2-10-1 USE PAPER SAVE OPTION FOR SUPPORTED PRINT OUTS
Some print outs, such as the screen display print out, can be
printed with either one or two classes per page. If Yes is
selected, 2 classes will be printed per sheet. Then you will
have to cut the paper in half.
2-10-2 DOES YOUR PRINTER SUPPORT LINE DRAW CHARACTERS
If the wrong settings is selected, a series of weird or foreign
language characters are printed for the line borders of the
calendar months of the Individual Attendance Reports. If No is
selected, dashes, the plus sign, and vertical bar are substituted
for the line drawing characters.
LaserJet printers attempt to use the PC-8 character set which
supports line drawing. The default set of the LaserJet printer
(Roman-8) does not support the line drawing characters.
2-10-3 DOES YOUR PRINTER USE A SHEET FEEDER
This selection prevents an extra page from being ejected from
the printer. The LaserJet printer is always set to Yes.
Page 15

Chapter 2 - SET UP MENU
2-10-4 USE LARGE SQUARES FOR EPSON VERTICAL STUDENT LIST
This selection applies only to Epson printers. It allows the boxes
to be either large or small. Other printers will print large
boxes.
2-10-5 MARK SKILLS USING B, D, AND I CODES (KENTUCKY)
Skills can be marked with B for Beginning, D for Developmental, or
I for Independent skills mastery. The state of Kentucky requires
these codes in the lower elementary grades. If No is selected,
mark codes with Y for Yes.
2-10-6 INCLUDE ATTENDANCE INFO. ON ACHIEVEMENT REPORTS
This selection determines if the attendance information boxes are
printed on the individual achievement reports (page 27).
2-10-7 PRINT OUT ALL SKILLS ON ACHIEVEMENT REPORTS
Student achievement reports can be printed with either all skills
or just those skills achieved by the student. If all skills are
printed the achieved skills have either a Y, B, D, I or ___
printed in front of the skill text.
2-10-8 PRINT PARENT COMMENT SHEET WITH ACHIEVEMENT REPORTS
Selecting Y for Yes will print a heading on a new page, and ask
for parent comments to be returned to the school by the student.
2-10-9 PRINT TEACHER NARRATIVE WITH ACHIEVEMENT REPORTS
An ASCII text file (a personal message) only to each student up to
ten lines long can be printed. Text files (personal messages) are
created in the Revise Names/SuperData/ASCII text selection of the
NAMES MENU.
2-10-10 USE 12 PITCH FOR PRINTING ACHIEVEMENT REPORTS
The Vertical Listing print out of the NAMES MENU prints the student
names followed by columns (similar to a blank grade book page).
If No is selected, the print outs will use 10 pitch. An example
of the vertical student listing is displayed on page 21.
2-11 SAVING THE DISPLAYED INFORMATION
When you are done making changes, choose this selection. The next
time STUDENT SKILLS POWER is started, these saved values are used.

Elementary Teachers
Elementary teachers who teach two sets of students should enter the
names of the two classes. For example one class could be called
SECOND GRADE - MRS. JONES and the second class SECOND GRADE - MRS.
SMITH. Students would be entered in each class with selection 3
of this menu. Both classes would use the same group of skills.
If some of the subject area skills are not taught to a class of
students, you could excuse those students with the appropriate
selection from the GROUPS MENU. You can also keep attendance
information for each set of students.
Secondary Teachers
Enter the course title and period numbers. For example, a
secondary teacher could enter EARTH SCIENCE PERIOD 1, and EARTH
SCIENCE PERIOD 2. Students are entered in each class with
selection 3 of this menu. All classes would use the same skill
groups. If some skill groups have not been taught yet, you could
excuse those students with the appropriate selection from the

display a help screen for editing information. Other columns of
this chart are explained in section 3-4 of this manual.
Students can be added to classes at any time. Enter the student's
last name first so student names can be alphabetize if desired. Do
not skip any rows when entering the student names. If you have 24
students in your class, then the first 24 rows must have names.
The Enter, up arrow, down arrow, tab or shift tab key must be
pressed after each student name is entered. When you have finished
entering the student names, press the ESCAPE key. Then you will be
asked if you want to alphabetize these names. Enter Y for Yes or
N for No. The student names are saved before returning to the
NAMES MENU.

3-4 REVISE STUDENT NAME/SUPERDATA/TEXT FILE
Student information entered with selection 3 of this menu can be
revised at any time with this selection. First select the class
that the student is enrolled in. The chart from the previous
page will be displayed. You can not delete students with this
selection. Students are deleted with selection 9 of this menu.
Move between columns by pressing either Tab or Shift-Tab. To move
the cursor in each column, use the up, down, page up, and page
down keys. The F1 key can be pressed to display a help screen for
editing information.
SuperData is another way to group reports. For example, if the
word football was entered for all football players, you would be
able to print reports for just football players. Different
SuperData like golf or debate, etc. could be used to generate a
different group of reports.
The ASCII Text column displays DOS filenames of personal messages
that can be written on specific individual progress reports.
Messages may be up to 10 lines long. A filename is automatically
entered if one is not displayed. The text editor can be accessed
by pressing Alt-T when the cursor is on the row containing the
student name. These text files are saved on the student data
diskette or in the student data subdirectory. Pressing Alt-D
followed by Enter deletes the text file name so the file will not
print on the reports. Text files are printed if Yes was selected
on the Change Miscellaneous Sub-Menu of the SET UP MENU.
When individual student reports are printed, the data subdirectory
or data diskette is checked to see if a matching ASCII file exists.
If the file exists, the information is included on the individual
printout.
Excused Groups displays the letter Y for each skill group the
student has been excused from. Students are excused from skill
groups with selection 6 on the GROUPS MENU.
Total absences and tardies for the current term are displayed in
the right two columns of this chart. Totals are derived from
information entered on the Record/Revise Absence/Tardy selection
of the ATTENDANCE MENU.
After pressing the Escape key to leave this display, you will be
asked if you want to alphabetize the names. Enter Y for Yes or N
for No. Changes are automatically saved to your data subdirectory
or student data diskette.

3-5,3-6 PRINT OUT STUDENT NAMES - SCREEN DISPLAY
Selection 5 prints out for one class. Selection 6 prints out all
classes.
This selection prints out a student listing as they appear on the
data entry screen. Three blank lines will be printed in front of
each student name. This is an easy way to print a listing of
students that will be gone for a field trip, etc.
This print out can be used for temporarily recording student
information. It is often much easier to enter information from
one sheet of paper than from 36 copies of unalphabetized papers
at a computer.

3-7,3-8 PRINT OUT ALL STUDENT NAMES - VERTICAL LISTING
Selection 7 prints out one class. Selection 8 prints out all
classes. This selection prints out a student vertical listing
with a set of boxes like a blank grade book page.
The selection on the Change Miscellaneous Sub-Menu of the SET-UP
MENU determines the size and pitch of the boxes. Only the Epson
Printer can print the small boxes. The large boxes will be printed
with 10 pitch for all supported printers.
This print out can be used for temporarily recording student
information if you don't have immediate access to a computer. It
is often much easier to enter information from one sheet of paper
than from 36 unalphabetized student papers at a computer.

Elementary teachers would divide the skills into groups based on
the discipline ( for example, math, science, reading, etc.). If a
teacher taught two classes of students, both classes could use the
same skill groups.
If some skill groups are not taught to a class of students, you
could excuse those students with selection 6 from the GROUPS MENU.
Secondary Teachers
Secondary teachers would divide the skills into groups based on
their units. For example, an earth science teacher could have
groups called rocks and minerals, weathering and erosion, rivers,
ground water, glaciers, volcanoes and plate tectonics, weather,
oceanography, and astronomy.
All classes can use the same skill groups. If some skill groups

As you move through the quarter (term) STUDENT SKILLS POWER will
display that part of the sheet near the current system data.
6-2 INDIVIDUAL ATTEND. REPORTS - View/PRINT OUT - ONE STUDENT
After selecting the class, you will be asked if you want to use
the calendar or the listing format.
The calendar format uses the six months of the current semester.
If the student was absent or tardy, the letter recorded with
selection 1 of the ATTENDANCE MENU replaces the day numeral on

the calendar. This display and print out helps spot absence and
tardy patterns.
The listing format prints the day and date of the absences. Total
absences and tardies for each quarter (term) and semester are
displayed and printed.
Select the student by moving the cursor and pressing the enter key
twice. The individual report will be displayed. Use the page down
or down arrow key to move to the bottom of the individual
attendance report. Press ESCAPE to leave this display. Press the

Chapter 6 - ATTENDANCE MENU
The lines that print the borders of the calendars of the Individual
Attendance Reports are set by the Change Miscellaneous Sub-Menu of
the SET UP MENU. If the wrong setting is made, a series of weird
or foreign language characters are printed for the line borders of
the calendar months. If No is selected, regular characters are
substituted for the line drawing characters.
For LaserJet printers, an attempt is made to use the PC-8 character
set which supports line drawing. The default set of the LaserJet
printer (Roman-8) does not support the line drawing characters.
After viewing or printing a report, you can return to the
ATTENDANCE MENU or continue to view/print other reports. Pressing
the letter Y will display the student list again. Then select
which student to view. Pressing the letter K (Keep Going) displays
the next student's report. Pressing the letter N for No returns to
the ATTENDANCE MENU.
6-3 6-4 6-5 MULTIPLE INDIVIDUAL ATTENDANCE REPORTS

4 prints attendance information for all classes. Selection 5
prints attendance information for students with matching superdata
in all classes.
After selecting the class or SuperData, choose either the calendar
or the listing format. A sample calendar print out is on the
previous page.
If no attendance information (no absences or tardies) was ever
entered for the student during the semester, that student report
will not be printed. Use the Advance Student Number selection of
the EXTRA MENU to start printing reports with a student other
than the first one listed.
6-6 DETAILED ATTENDANCE REPORT - PRINT OUT - ONE CLASS

with class number 1. When this selection is chosen, enter the new
class number. Printing will begin with this class and end with
the last class. The starting class number will remain active until
you leave STUDENT SKILLS POWER or reset this number back to 1.

leave STUDENT SKILLS POWER or reset this number back to 1. This
selection will be inactive if only one group was entered.
This selection can be helpful if you are in the middle of printing
and the paper jammed in the printer, or Escape was pressed to stop
printing the reports.
7-7 RUN SKILLS MODULE
WISCO Computing may develop and other programmers may write other
modules that use information from the STUDENT SKILLS POWER name,
data, attendance, and SKILLS.CNF files. Examples of other modules
include graphics routines, special class cards, word processing,
etc.
Modules have been written by others to access the information in
the STUDENT SKILLS POWER file. The module name should start with
the letter G and be two letters long. For example a seating chart
module could have the filename GS.EXE. When this selection is
made, you will be asked to enter the module name. You would enter
the letter S. Your computer would run the GS.EXE program.
Another registered user has created Word Perfect macros that read
the STUDENT SKILLS POWER files and merges the information with
other files to create quite a variety of charts and reports.
Page 36
STUDENT SKILLS POWER MANUAL
Chapter 7 - EXTRA MENU
Depending on user interest, WISCO Computing could become a
clearing house for all these neat modules that help make
computing both fun and productive.
WISCO Computing plans to include some of their modules within the
program as additional enhancements and for trouble shooting help.
7-8 MAKING A BACK UP OF THE STUDENT DATA DISKETTE
This selection automatically makes a back up copy of the student
data diskette without using the DOS utilities. Follow the
instructions on the screen.
The original student data diskette must remain in the regular disk
drive. You may press the ESCAPE key to leave this selection.
If you are backing up your data to a hard drive subdirectory, you
would enter something similar to C:\GSBACKUP\
If you are backing up your data to a diskette, you would only need
to enter the Drive letter and the colon and back slash, for example
A:\
If necessary, place a formatted diskette in the BACK UP disk drive.
Pressing any regular key except ESCAPE starts the BACK UP process.
The student name, data, attendance, and note pad files will be read
and copied to the back up diskette. The ASCII Text files printed
on the individual reports (displayed on the Revise Student
Names/I.D. selection of the NAMES MENU) are not backed up. If the
BACK UP diskette was in the drive that normally contains the
program diskette because you only have two disk drives, return the
STUDENT SKILLS POWER program diskette to that disk drive. Then
press any key to continue.
If your original data diskette becomes damaged, you will have to
read the student data from your back up diskette. This is easily
done. Use the DOS program COPY or XCOPY to copy all files from
your backup diskette (or hard drive subdirectory) to the new data
diskette.
STUDENT SKILLS POWER can also read the backup diskette directly by
starting the program with the command SKILLS /J You will be asked
to enter the drive containing the student data. If your back up
data is on a diskette, enter the drive letter, colon, and back
slash, for example, A:\ If your backup data is in a hard drive
subdirectory, enter the drive letter, colon, back slash, and
Page 37
STUDENT SKILLS POWER MANUAL
Chapter 7 - EXTRA MENU
subdirectory name, for example, C:\GSBACKUP\ Then you will be
asked if you are ready to read the new data. Press Y for Yes.
You should then either save the new drive information by saving
the information in memory with the SET UP MENU, and make a back
up of this data disk on another floppy.
This new drive information will be used until you change it by
starting STUDENT SKILLS POWER again with the SKILLS /J option.
Then enter the old drive information, and save that information
with the SAVE selection of the SET UP MENU.
7-9 REVISE/REVIEW STUDENT SKILLS POWER COLORS
Up to 127 color combinations may be used by STUDENT SKILLS POWER.
When this selection is made, a chart showing the 127 color
combinations and their associated numbers is displayed.
The default values for screen colors are listed below. The first
column is for color monitors. The second column is used for
monochrome monitors. You may enter different numbers from the
displayed chart:
Color Monochrome
Normal Screen Color: 023 007
Help Screen Color: 113 007
Pull Down Menu Color: 043 112
Error Color: 079 112
Text Entry Color: 112 007
Menu Selection Color: 007 007
When you have finished entering the color numbers, press the Escape
key. Then enter a number for the mouse cursor color. The (1-7)
number refers to the chart column. For example 4 represents red.
Some menu selections deliberately turn the mouse cursor off to
prevent accidental loss of data. The mouse cursor is turned back
on when appropriate. The press Y for Yes to save these changes.
7-10 SCHOOL YEAR: 1992-93
This setting was made when the new school year was started. This
information is needed to display the proper calendar when the F2
function key is pressed and for determining the days of the week
when recording and printing attendance information. The year must
be entered with the format 1992-93. This menu selection remains
inactive.
Page 38

7-11 SET TERM START/END DATES
Enter the starting and ending dates of each term for the entire
school year. The dates must be entered with the format 08-27-1992.
If you enter the wrong format, the computer will beep. If you need
help, the calendar can be displayed by pressing the F2 Function
key. This program allows up to 75 school days (Monday-Friday) per
grading term.
Starting and ending dates are used to calculate student absences
and tardies. These dates also determine the limits for cursor
movement when recording and revising student absences and tardies.
Press the ESCAPE key when you have finished entering the start and
end dates for each term. Press Y for Yes to save these dates to
diskette.
7-12 SELECT NON-STUDENT DAYS
All week days between the start date of your first term and the
ending date of your last term are displayed on the left side of the
screen. The arrow keys are used to scroll cursor between dates.
Move the cursor to the dates that the students are not present.
Press the letter N to mark Non Student days. Press the space bar
to erase the letter N. Up to 36 Non Student days can be selected
for the school year. When you have finished marking all Non
Student days, press the Escape key. The marked dates are listed
on the right side of the screen. Enter Y for Yes to save these
dates before returning to the EXTRA MENU.
7-13 TEACHER NOTE PAD
This note pad (up to 10 lines) can be used to store reminders
such as when certain parents get a report, for example after a
student misses an assignment, fails a test, every two weeks,
incomplete assignment, listing mid-term progress report due dates,
etc. This file is backed up when using the Back Up selection of
the EXTRA MENU.
Pressing the F1 function key displays a help screen for editing
lines of this note pad. Press the Enter key before pressing the
Escape key after editing the last line to have the displayed
information replace the information in the NOTEPAD.GRD file.

7-16 ABOUT STUDENT SKILLS POWER
STUDENT SKILLS POWER was written entirely by Terry L. Jepson. The
author, a full time teacher, gave up his weekend, evening, and
vacation time he could have spent watching football games,
spending time with friends, or just relaxing.
He has tried to add those features requested by his customers to
meet their needs. Please reward him by having your friends buy
their copy of the program.

8-1 ADDITIONAL START UP OPTIONS
Use the instructions on pages 8 through 11 for normal start up.
Information on retrieving student data from a backup diskette or
hard drive subdirectory can be found on page 37 of this manual.
STUDENT SKILLS POWER is normally started by typing SKILLS
However, there may be times when you need to start differently.
These additional start up options are typed after SKILLS as
indicated below.
8-1-1 SKILLS /INSTALL
This option is used to start STUDENT SKILLS POWER for a new school
year. These complete instructions are found on pages 8 through 11.
8-1-2 SKILLS /J
You will be prompted to enter the drive or subdirectory containing
the student data. This option overrides the subdirectory setting
in the SKILLS.DRV file. For example, a department with a legal
site license would only need one copy of the STUDENT SKILLS POWER
program on the computer. All teachers could access their data in
different subdirectories using this option.
When the program is started with the command SKILLS /J you will be
asked to enter the drive containing the student data. If your data
is on a diskette, enter the drive letter, colon, and back slash,
for example, A:\ If your student data is in a hard drive
subdirectory, enter the drive letter, colon, back slash, and
subdirectory name, for example, C:\GSDATA\ Then you will asked
if you are ready to read the new data. Press Y for Yes. This
data drive information will be saved when any settings are saved
on the SET UP MENU.
8-1-3 SKILLS /JC:\SMITH\
This start up option automatically accesses data from the SMITH
subdirectory of drive C:. Jones could keep data in subdirectory
C:\JONES\ and start the program with SKILLS /JC:\JONES\ Smith
could keep data in subdirectory C:\SMITH\ and start the program
with SKILLS /JC:\SMITH\ This option is useful for using a menu
selection program to access different directories with the site
license version.
Page 42
STUDENT SKILLS POWER MANUAL
Chapter 8 - MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATION
8-1-4 SKILLS /B
This start up option will use black and white for display. This
may be necessary to read the display of some lap top computers.
8-1-5 SKILLS /C
This start up option will force color for display. If the program
detects a monochrome monitor, the color setting will be ignored.
8-2 ENHANCEMENTS PLANNED FOR STUDENT SKILLS POWER
Hooks have been included so STUDENT SKILLS POWER files can be
accessed by other programs or modules written by WISCO Computing or
other authors. Examples include graphic routines, seating chart
maker, and additional font support. Customer requests will
determine which features and modules are added to this powerful
program.
8-3 FILES CREATED BY STUDENT SKILLS POWER
The file SKILLS.DRV is created on the program diskette. It
contains the drive or drive subdirectory to search for student
data.
The file SKILLS.CNF is created on the student data diskette. This
file contains course title and period names, skill group names,
printer number, and information displayed on the SET UP MENU.
Back ups of this file are called SKILLS.CN1.
All files starting with SKILLS1. are used for the first class
recorded on the Student Names Menu. Files ending with .NAM
contain student names for the class.
SKILLS Files ending with .G1 contain the data and skill text for
group 1. Files ending with .G2 contain the data and skill text
for group 2.
SKILLTXT files can be checked with a spell checker if necessary.
The file NOTEPAD.GRD is the note pad file created with the
selection on the EXTRA MENU.
ASCII text files created by the Revise Student Names/Text File of
the NAMES MENU are named according to their class and student
number. For example, GRTEXT2.S11 is a text file for the 11th
student in the (2) second class.
