The papyrus mentions garlic as
an enema for inflammation of the
anus in a mixture of wine, bile of a
fat ox, opium and honey. (I'll bet
that would get your attention!)

De Candole in his Origin of
Cultivated Plants, places garlic as
a native to the Kagiz Desert region
of Siberia. Nomadic tribes brought
it to Asia Minor and probably
China. From there it reportedly
went to India. Egypt was probably
the next stop after which it made
its way to Europe. Marco Polo
figured into this migration of the
herb as probably did the Crusades.

Like our GIs' in World War II, the
Crusaders must have savored some fine
cooking using garlic and carried the
bulbs back home to Europe. Today it
is grown in all parts of the world.

The Old Testament reports that
Israelite slaves upon fleeing Egypt
were disappointed in their diet of
manna. They wept saying, "We remember
the fish which we were wont to eat
in Egypt for naught, the cucumbers
and the melons, and the leeks, onions
and garlic." (Numbers 11:5)
Mohammed recommended garlic in
cases of stings and bites of wild
animals.
