FAMILY HISTORY SYSTEM
Installation Procedure for the
Basic Set of Programs
Before beginning this INSTALL procedure, you should make certain that
you have all the diskettes that make up the public portion of the
Family History System software. You should have three 5 1/4" (360k)
diskettes or one 3 1/2" (720k) diskette. During the INSTALL proce-
dure, the 5 1/4" diskettes will be referred to as the "B1", "B2" and
"B3" diskettes, or the 3 1/2" diskette will be referred to as "B1".
If your diskettes are not labeled this way, you should mark them
properly before beginning the INSTALL procedure. To determine the
proper Identification for a diskette, place the diskette in your A
drive and enter: dir a:/p
The "B1" diskette will have a file named "FHSDISK.B1" on it. Similar-
ly, the "B2" diskette will have a file named "FHSDISK.B2" and the "B3"
diskette will have a file named "FHSDISK.B3". In the following de-
scription, I will refer to these diskettes as the Family History
System "distribution diskettes" because that is how they are "distrib-
uted" or "sent out" by me.
(NOTE to Registered Users: If you are installing the com-
plete set of Family History System programs, you should have
one additional 5 1/4" diskette or 3 1/2" diskette. It will
be labeled "X1". You should place that diskette in a dis-
kette drive, make it the default drive and enter:
GO INSTALL
to receive instructions for installing the complete set of
programs. The remaining instructions in this document are
for those who are ONLY working with the PUBLIC VERSION of the
system.)
The distribution diskette(s) for the Family History System contain
many files that are not used during the normal operation of the sys-
tem. The purpose of the INSTALL procedure is to prepare a "working
copy" of those files that are required for you to create, maintain and
process files of information about your own Family. Because of the
many types of disk media from which the system may be run, including
Hard or "Floppy" disks, and in the latter case, either 5 1/4" or
3 1/2" sizes and standard or high density formats, I have provided an
INSTALL procedure that is intended to automate this task as much as
possible.
The installation procedures for hard and "floppy" disks will be de-
scribed separately in the following sections. You need only read the
section that pertains to you.
INSTALLING THE SOFTWARE ON A HARD DISK.
To install the programs on a hard disk, you will need to know the
"Drive ID" of the hard drive. Ordinarily this will be the character
"C" although it may be "D", "E", "F", etc. if you have more than one
hard drive, or have partitioned the hard drive.
Place the B1 diskette in a drive of your PC and make it the "default"
drive. (If the drive is the "A" drive, then you would make it the
default drive by entering: "A:" without the quotes.)
Then enter: GO INSTALL HD x y
where "x" is the "Drive ID" character for the diskette drive with the
distribution diskette and "y" is the "Drive ID" character for your
hard drive. This command must be entered in CAPS and the drive ID
character must NOT have a colon at the end of it (that is, use "C" not
"C:").
If this is the first time you have installed the software, a "\FAMILY"
directory will be created on the hard drive and all programs will be
copied into it. Your family files will also reside in this same
subdirectory, unless you place them on another disk.
If you are re-installing the software, you may see the message:
"Unable to create sub-directory"
because the directory already exists. This message may be ignored.
The programs will simply be copied to the existing FAMILY directory,
replacing the previous program files. Neither your existing files nor
any changes you have made to the system defaults will be affected by
the INSTALL process.
After the process is complete, you can begin a FHS session by enter-
ing: CD \FAMILY
and FAMINIT
or from the main directory of your hard disk, you can simply enter:
FHS
INSTALLING THE SOFTWARE ON "FLOPPY" DISKETTES.
When installing the programs on floppy diskettes, it is best to have 2
diskette drives for the INSTALL process, one for the distribution
diskette(s) and a second for the diskette(s) on which the software is
to be installed. If your PC has a single diskette drive, it is still
possible to INSTALL from drive "A" to drive "B", letting the operating
system tell you when to remove a diskette from "A" and replace it with
one for "B", but it will require a LOT of "disk shuffling" and may be
confusing. If you are going to attempt the installation using a
single diskette drive, I recommend that you "write protect" the dis-
tribution diskettes so that they don't accidentally become "corrupted"
if the diskettes aren't switched at the proper time.
The number of diskettes required for a working copy of the software
depends upon the capacity of the diskettes that you will be using as
follows:
5 1/4" (360k) - 3 diskettes, a STARTUP, UTILITY and REPORT
3 1/2" (720k) - 2 diskettes, a STARTUP and a UTILITY
5 1/4" (1.2M) or 3 1/2" (1.4M) - 1 diskette, the STARTUP diskette
Starting with the appropriate number of blank diskettes, you must
prepare them using the DOS FORMAT command. You may want to use the
"/S" parameter of the FORMAT command for the STARTUP diskette so that
it will be "bootable" (which means you could put it in the A drive of
your PC, turn the PC on and DOS would be "loaded" from the diskette).
You should not use the "/S" parameter when formatting the REPORT or
UTILITY diskettes as it will simply waste space on those diskettes.
You may want to place a copy of the COMMAND.COM file on each of the
diskettes.
Please be aware that the FORMAT command will destroy any information
that previously existed on the diskettes that you use so make sure
that the diskettes don't have anything on them that you want to pre-
serve. You should not use diskettes which have 'bad sectors' after
the format command. This doesn't make the diskettes unusable, but it
may not leave enough space on the diskette for the INSTALL procedure
to copy all the programs it would like.
After formatting and appropriately labeling the diskette(s) that are
to receive the working copy of the Family History System programs,
place the X1 diskette in a drive of your PC and, after making it the
"default" drive, enter: GO INSTALL xx y z
where: xx = 3D if you are installing onto three 5 1/4" diskettes
= 2D if you are installing onto two 3 1/2" diskettes
= 1D if you are installing onto a single diskette,
y = the drive ID character of the diskette drive with the
distribution diskette in it
and z = the drive ID character of the diskette drive in which
the STARTUP, REPORT or UTILITY diskettes will be placed
during the INSTALL procedure.
The drive ID's should be expressed as a single character, without a
trailing colon. That is, as "B" and not "B:".
After the installation is complete, you can start the system after
your PC has "booted" by placing the STARTUP diskette in the A drive
and entering: FHS or FAMINIT. If you formatted the STARTUP dis-
kette with the "/S" parameter, you can also start the system by plac-
ing the STARTUP diskette in the A drive and then turning the PC on, or
by pressing the CTRL+ALT+DEL keys simultaneously if the PC is already
on.
This installation procedure distributes the program files among the
STARTUP, REPORT and UTILITY diskettes in a way that is intended to
minimize the number of disk changes you will have to make. If you
select a Main Menu item and the required program is not on the dis-
kette that is in the default drive, then you will be asked to:
Place Program Diskette in Default Drive
This means to remove the program diskette that is currently in the
drive and replace it with another of the program diskettes that you
have created, hopefully the one with the proper program on it. The
following table indicates the programs that are required for each Main
Menu option and the program diskette on which it may be found.
Option FILE 3D-Install 2D-Install 1D-Install
CONFIG.SYS STARTUP STARTUP STARTUP
AUTOEXEC.BAT STARTUP STARTUP STARTUP

F3-4 FAM4PRNT.EXE UTILITY UTILITY STARTUP
F7 DATECALC.COM all three both STARTUP
BRUN30.EXE STARTUP STARTUP STARTUP
FAMILY.DAT STARTUP STARTUP STARTUP
If the location of the program files doesn't match your working style,
you have a great deal of freedom in "reorganizing" these diskettes by
moving the program files around. The only restrictions are:
FAMINIT.EXE, FAMMENU.EXE, BRUN30.EXE and FAMILY.DAT must be on
the STARTUP diskette
FAMINIT.EXE, BRUN30.EXE and FAMILY.DAT should only be on the
STARTUP diskette.
A NOTE FOR THOSE WHO ARE UPGRADING FROM AN EARLIER VERSION
If you are upgrading from an earlier version of this software, you may
continue working with all your family files just as before. No con-
version process is required. If you have made any changes to the
default file name tables, screen colors, or printer control tables,
you may transfer those changes to the new program diskettes by copying
the FAMILY.DAT file from your previous program diskette to the STARTUP
diskette. If you are re-installing the programs on a hard disk, your
FAMILY.DAT file will not be affected so your changes to these default
values will be retained throughout the INSTALL process.
