  8.                          Patent Cooperation Treaty

  10.                The United States is also a party to the Patent
  11.           Cooperation Treaty (PCT), which provides procedures for
  12.           filing patent applications in its member countries. The PCT
  13.           allows an applicant to file one "international application"
  14.           designating member countries in which a patent is sought,
  15.           with the same effect as filing national applications in
  16.           each of those countries. The applicant may then later
  17.           proceed with the filing of separate "national" applications
  18.           in those countries.
