What goes on in our minds
affects our bodies; according
to Blair Justice, Ph.D. Be-
liefs, thoughts and attitudes
can alter hormones and neuro-
transmitters (messengers that
allow cells to "talk" to one
another; and also control many
of the physical functions)
levels.
Our immune systems can be weak-
ened by what we " entertain"
ourselves with mentally. Too
many stress hormones can lead
to cholesterol build-up and

heart disease. High readings of
these chemicals can also lower
the antibody activity that
protects us against tumors and
foreign invaders. Feeling we
are in charge of our lives, can
stop stress chemicals from
climbing to destructive
heights. Being open to change
and having an attitude of
involvement can strengthen our
immunity.
On the other side of the coin,
feeling helpless can depress
our immune system and decrease
