  1. SHAREWARE VERSIONS OF THE SCHOLAR'S PAK
  2. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  3. If you downloaded your copy from a bulletin board you should have a number
  4. of ZIPPED files. Format your disks and unzip the files to each of these
  5. disks.  If you use 360K or 720k or 1200K disks and wish to distribute it
  6. using these disks, read topic 9903 after you have installed the program.
  7. The install procedure can convert one size of disk to another.
  8.  
  9. If you purchased the package from a shareware dealer and if you do not
  10. want to become very frustrated, take 5 minutes and label your disks as
  11. follows:
  12.  
  13. 1) If the disk contains a file install.exe, label it the Install disk
  14. 2) If the disk contains a series of files scholar.001, scholar.002,
  15.    ... scholar.913, label the series the "Scholar Text Module" 1, 2, ... 13.
  16. 3) If the disk contains a series of files cxref.001 and cxref.902,
  17.    label the series the "Cross References" 1 & 2.
  18. 4) If the disk contains a series of files topics.001 ... topics 904,
  19.    label the series the "Topics" 1, 2, 3 & 4.
  20. 5) If the disk contains a series of files lexicon.001 ... lexicon 904,
  21.    label the series the "Lexicons" 1, 2, 3 & 4.
  22. 6) Treasury of Scripture Knowledge, tsk.001, tsk.002, tsk.003, tsk.904,
  23.    label the series the "TSK" 1, 2, 3 & 4.
  24. 7) The People's New Testament, pnt.001, pnt.002, pnt.003, pnt.904,
  25.    label the series the "PNT" 1, 2, 3 & 4. (Optional Material)

  27. A complete Scholar's PAK should contain 9 HD 3 1/2" disks or 18 LD 3 1/2"
  28. disks or about 32 5 1/4 disks.

  30. Select option A on the install menu repeatily to install all these modules.

  32. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
  33. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

  35. To run the Online Bible, the following are required:
  36.  
  37.       IBM PC, XT, AT, PS/2 or compatible computer
  38.  
  39.       At least 256K memory
  40.  
  41.       Hard disk drive with at least 15 megabytes of free space. You
  42.        will need a total of 22 megabytes if you install the "Treasury of
  43.        Scripture Knowledge" module. If you select the data
  44.        compression option on the install procedure, the total size is
  45.        reduced by 7 megabytes to a total of only 15 megabytes.

  47.       MS-DOS 3.1 or higher, or DR DOS 3.41 or higher, or OS/2
  48.        release 2.1 or higher. Enter VER at the command prompt to
  49.        check which version you have.

  52. SOFTWARE SUPPLIED
  53. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  54. Your disk package will include an INSTALL disk to install all
  55. modules; a TEXT module on several disks, a LEXICON module on
  56. several disks, a TOPICS module on several disks, and a CROSS-
  57. REFERENCE module on one or more disks. The optional "Treasury
  58. of Scripture Knowledge" module is on one or more disks.

  61. CONVERTING THE DISTRIBUTION DISKS TO OTHER SIZES
  62. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  63. The Online Bible is distributed on 3 1/2 inch HD disks. Convert these
  64. using the install program. On your machine, format enough disks to
  65. hold all the data that is on the 3 1/2 inch HD disks. Use a machine that
  66. handles both sizes of disks. Follow steps four and five on the next page
  67. to convert the 3 1/2 inch HD disks to your disk size.

  70. INSTALLATION PROCEDURE

  72. The installation procedure installs the Online Bible in a directory called
  73. C:\BIBLE. You may change this to any directory.
  74.  
  75.    1.  Check to be certain that you have the correct system and
  76.        software.
  77.  
  78.    2.  If your version of the Online Bible is version 1, 2 or 3, delete
  79.        it from your system to conserve disk space. This version will
  80.        correctly replace any version after version 3. You do not have
  81.        to delete the existing version.

  83.    3.  Ensure that all master disks are write-protected.
  84.  
  85.    4.  Insert the installation disk into a floppy drive, and make that
  86.        drive the current drive (i.e. set the DOS prompt to "A:" if using
  87.        drive A. Type a: and press ENTER.).
  88.  
  89.    5.  Type GO and then press ENTER. Follow the on-screen
  90.        instructions.
  91.  
  92.    6.  When the installation is complete, select the menu option to exit
  93.        the install procedure. Reboot the computer by pressing CTRL
  94.        ALT DEL together, or by switching the computer off, pausing,
  95.        and switching the computer back on again. Your system will
  96.        now use the updated CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT so
  97.        the Online Bible will run properly.

  100. EGA AND VGA SUPPORT
  101. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  102. The Online Bible automatically senses the number of lines on your
  103. screen and adjusts the displays accordingly. The default mode of most
  104. screens is 25 lines of text. EGA or VGA graphics systems are capable
  105. of displaying more than 25 lines and have built-in support for 28 lines
  106. (VGA), 43 lines (EGA) or 50 lines (VGA) of text.

  108. To allow you to switch to these modes, there are four small utility
  109. programs supplied with the Online Bible:
  110.  
  111.    VGA50 switches VGA cards to display 50 lines of text
  112.    VGA28 switches VGA cards to display 28 lines of text
  113.    EGA43 switches EGA cards to display 43 lines of text
  114.    CRT25 switches EGA or VGA to display 25 lines of text
  115.  
  116. All of these modes still display the standard 80 characters per line. We
  117. recommend using 28 line mode for VGA screens.

  119. SCREEN COLOURS
  120. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  121. The Online Bible allows screen colours to be adjusted or replaced.
  122. Please note that to adjust colours in the text editor (for making your
  123. own notes), you need to run the program UEDCFG from outside the
  124. Online Bible. See pages 78 and 103.

  127. INSTALLING THE ONLINE BIBLE AS A TSR
  128. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  129. It is possible to install a special function of the Online Bible as a
  130. "Terminate and Stay Resident" program. The advantage of this is that
  131. you can call up biblical passages while working in your usual word
  132. processor, without having to exit the word processor to run the Online
  133. Bible. Details are given Appendix C in Online Manual that you can access 
  134. from the Mini-Menu when you install the program.

  137. INSTALL DISK UPDATE
  138. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  139. If you ordered the latest manual and a new install disk, you do not
  140. have to reinstall the entire Online Bible. Just install until the main
  141. selection menu appears. Select the option to exit the install procedure.
  142. Everything is now updated.

  146. PROBLEM-SOLVING DURING INSTALLATION

  149. Data Errors Reading Disks
  150. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  151. Specify "Retry" to the DOS "Data error reading drive" message. Do
  152. this many times if necessary.

  154. Try installing the Online Bible on your friend's computer. If this
  155. works, correct the hardware or software problem on your machine and
  156. redo the install procedure. Sometimes, performing the install using
  157. your original DOS disk will work. If this fails, return your master
  158. disks to your vendor for replacement.

  161. Installation Fails
  162. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  163. Often this is caused by a conflict with a memory-resident program
  164. (TSR) or device driver. Remove all such programs temporarily, install
  165. the Online Bible, and gradually re-install the programs and device
  166. drivers while checking for problems.

  168. You do not have to delete partially installed files to rerun the install
  169. procedure.

  173. PROBLEM-SOLVING AFTER SUCCESSFUL INSTALLATION

  175. Program fails with message "Use MM Batch File to Run the Bible"
  176. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  177. Use one of the supplied batch files, MM.BAT or SCHOLAR.BAT, to
  178. start the program.

  181. Printer does not Print Accented Letters
  182. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  183. Most printers require either a dip switch adjustment or a special
  184. command code to print accented letters. Each printer is different. See
  185. your printer manual for details. Try printing your data to a file and use
  186. your word processor to print it.

  189. Screen Difficult to Read
  190. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  191. Reinstall and reply no to the prompt asking you whether you have a
  192. colour monitor. If you have a VGA adapter and a monochrome
  193. display, do not specify screen colours.

  196. Cross-references do not work
  197. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  198. The cross-reference module is on same 3 1/2 inch HD disk as install
  199. procedure and you most likely forgot to install it. If you have installed
  200. the "Treasury of Scripture Knowledge" module you really do not need
  201. duplicate the cross-references by installing the cross-reference module.

  203. CONCLUSION

  212. - if you are still stuck, ask friend for help who knows about DOS

  232. commission or shareware fees from you. To expect me to atone for sins of
  233. every shareware dealer is not realistic. If you have problems that you
  234. cannot resolve or if your set is incomplete, we will sell you for our
