THE SHAREWARE CONCEPT
The Book-E is distributed as shareware. Shareware is commercial
software distributed in an unconventional manner. Microcomputers copy
information very easily. Instead of trying to frustrate this through
copy protection, shareware takes advantage of it to reach as many users
as possible at the lowest cost. Anyone may copy a shareware program and
distribute it to whomever they desire, provided they do not charge a
fee for the program or alter it.
Shareware isn't free. Serious shareware is as polished as any
conventional commercial product, and represents just as much program-
ming effort. If you use it regularly, the authors expect compensation.
However, unlike conventional distribution, shareware allows you to
evaluate the product before you decide to purchase it. The price is
often lower, as well, because there are no advertising, packaging, or
distribution costs.
It can only work with your support. If you are still using a share-
ware product after a couple of weeks, then it is obviously worth some-
thing to you, and you should register it.

The Book-E was designed for disktop publishers, authors, and anyone
wanting to publish or distribute their ASCII text files in a stand-alone
EXE program. In this way, their writings cannot be easily altered or
printed without their desire but still enable the distribution of their
work and without the need for another program for it to be viewed.
The Book-E creates customizable stand-alone EXE's with scrolling windows
for viewing and optional menu, mouse, search, and print features. There
are also an assortment of borders and color schemes available so that you
can make each publication you distribute unique.
The Book-E includes on-line help, mouse support, text file viewer with
search and print options, and 3 different shells to customize your stand-
alone programs (SHELL1 is included in the shareware version, all three are
included in the registered version).
The text file viewer enables you to load a text file for viewing,
searching, or printing. These features are the same ones available in your
finished EXE files.
The size of the text file that can be loaded into the text viewer will
depend upon available memory. The text file you want to build into an EXE
does not have to be loaded into the view window in order to be built.
Simply enter the file paths and names into the input fields in the BUILD
EXE form and then select the BUILD option. If a text file is loaded in the
view window when you select BUILD EXE, the file paths and names will auto-
matically be displayed in the form. If this file is not the one you want
to use, you can put the names you wish to use in the input fields.
The text file is formatted into fixed length lines of text when build-
ing. The finished EXE can be from two to two and a half times the size of
the original data file, depending upon the text file and the SHELL option
used.
You can build an EXE as big as available disk space. If the book or
publication is larger than will load into the viewer, you can enter the
file names in the form as described above.
To load the Book-E for a color monitor, at the DOS prompt, type:
book-e
and for a monochrome monitor type:
book-e /m
