.TOPIC:
Margins
═══════════════════════════MARGINS══════════════════════════════
You can set 4 different margins in TP-ET.
Top Margin: determines how many blank lines at the top of each
page before the first line of text begins.
Bottom Margin: determines how many blank lines will be at the
bottom of each page.
3 blank lines at the Top and 3 blank lines
at the Bottom are the minimums for every page of text. The
maximum lines of text on any page is 60. The reason for this is
TP-ET must remain compatible with all printers. Laser printers
only allow 60 lines of text on a page. The amount of allowed
lines of text will be determined by your Top/Bottom settings.
Left Margin: sets the start of each line of text.
Right Margin: sets the end of each line of text.
To set the margins use the Scroll Bar for each setting:

broken in two. The last space character will determine where a
line wraps.
With Word Wrap OFF text will continue on the current line past
the Right Margin. It is possible for you to type up to 30,000
character on 1 line of text. 30,000 is the maximum capacity of
TP-ET.

Save Config File
═══════════════════════SAVE CONFIG FILE═════════════════════════
All of your document settings can be saved to a Configuration
file on disk named TP-ET.CNF. If you generally use the same
settings with all documents saving your settings will save you
time whenever you use TP-ET. The first thing TP-ET looks for
when it loads is TP-ET.CNF. If it is found all settings are
loaded into memory and become the default settings. If TP-ET.CNF
does not exist then built in default settings are used.
Mouse:
Click Yes/No.
KeyBoard:
Use the TAB key to focus your desired response then press

Load Config File
═══════════════════════LOAD CONFIG FILE═════════════════════════
The reason for re-loading the settings in TP-ET.CNF are; if you
have adjusted any of the settings after starting TP-ET those
settings remain in effect. If you want to go back to your usual
settings simply select Load Config File from the Settings Menu
and all of your normal default settings will be re-established.
You can also re-load TP-ET.CNF from the File Menu in the
Edit Screen.

Screen Blank
═══════════════════════SCREEN BLANK═════════════════════════════
If you are already using a Screen Blank utility you don't need
to use this feature. Screen Blank is not a true Screen Saver
utility. What is happening is a blank form is placed on your
screen with the color's set to Black on Black. This in effect
Blanks your screen. The reason for this method is simplicity and
compatibility. This method works with all video adapters. To
bring the screen back to it's original display simply Click a
mouse button or press the ENTER key. This feature is also
avalable in the Edit Screen Options Menu.

.TOPIC:
New Driver
═══════════════════════NEW DRIVER═════════════════════════════════════════
The New Driver Selection will open a List Box with all the
available Printers that TP-ET supports. This list is stored in
TPPRN.DAT the driver codes are in TPPRN.DRV. If either of these
files are not found in the default Drive/Diretory an error message
will appear. The list that appears will be a combination of over
50 printers. Generally selecting one of these drivers will
be compatible with your printer. You should first check your
printer manual to see what printers your printer can emulate.
You should also pay particular attention to any reference in
your printer manuals as to any dip switches that must be set
before the desired emulation can take effect. Generally once
you have set the dip switches it is a good idea to turn the
printer off than back on to make sure the effects take place.
The file ETPRN.DRV contains the codes and Printer
Port of the current loaded driver.
Mouse:
Click Printer then Click New Driver. When the List Box
appears use the Scroll Bar to view the list of Printers.
Click the Printer you desire and Click Accept. Clicking
Cancel retains the current Printer Driver.
KeyBoard:

Return Dos
═══════════════════════RETURN TO DOS════════════════════════════
Return to Dos serves one purpose to exit TP-ET and return to the
DOS prompt. Always use Return to DOS to exit the program. If you
exit any other way you may leave file/s open. Doing so you run
the risk of losing all text in the file.

Shell Dos
══════════════════════SHELL TO DOS══════════════════════════════
Shell to Dos allows you to return to DOS and still leave TP-ET
in memory. This is handy if you need to format a new disk
because of low disk space. Remember, TP-ET is still in memory
so you will have little RAM memory available for loading another
program. Shell to Dos is also available from the Edit Screen in
the File Menu. To return to TP-ET at the DOS prompt type:
EXIT [ENTER]. You will be returned to whichever Screen from
which you selected Shell to Dos.

.TOPIC:
When To Save As A .LET File
══════════════════════WHEN TO SAVE AS A .LET FILE═══════════════
Throughout the Help File many references are made to a .LET File.
A .LET file is different in one respect from any other file you
may save in TP-ET. The .LET file also contains all the margin
settings you were using when the file was first saved. When you
load a .LET file into the Edit Screen the Screen will adjust to
these margins. Along with the margin settings the original
Box Set and Date/Time stamp will take effect.
If you plan to add or edit an existing .LET file at some future
time everything will be the same as it was when the file was
originally created.
You would save a document as a .LET file if you plan to add
or edit the file later. If you have embedded printer codes in
the document this doesn't mean that you have to save it as a
.LET file. By loading the file into the Edit Screen and using
the Convert Filt To ASCII selection of the FILE Menu you can
remove all embedded printer codes.
Next time you are asked if you want to save the document as
a .LET file consider the above.
════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════
.TOPIC:
Convert File To ASCII
══════════════════════CONVERT FILE TO ASCII═════════════════════
Convert file removes all embedded printer codes from a document.
By doing this you are left with a pure ASCII file that can be
loaded into any word processor that accepts ASCII files. If you
leave the printer codes in the document and try to load it in
another program the codes could cause unpredictable results in
that program.
Another option under Convert File To ASCII is Remove Codes and
insert Carriage Return and Line Feed at the end of a line. The way
TP-ET saves a file is as one complete strings of characters. In
other words it is possible for a document in TP-ET to be 30,000
characters long all on one line. What Insert CR/LF does is
determines where the end of each line is as it appears in the Edit
Screen and then inserts a CR/LF at that point. It then sends just
that line of text to a disk file.
This is essentially what happens when you print the document.
In order to use this function you MUST HAVE A FILE LOADED FROM
DISK in the Edit Screen. A new file you are working on will
not be accepted. In fact if you look at the File Menu you will
see that Convert File To ASCII will be grayed out. In other
words you will not be able to select it.
With a file loaded from disk select File then select Convert File
To ASCII. Another sub-menu will open up. If you have Word Wrap on
there will be 3 choices. If Word Wrap is off there will be 2
choices. With Word Wrap on you can just remove the embedded
printer codes or remove the codes and add CR/LF to the file. The
3rd choice is Cancel the Convert.
If Word Wrap is off then you can only remove embedded printer codes.
Word Wrap off assumes you have the CR/LF where you want them. That
is why they are not inserted. Also with Word Wrap off your left
margin of the converted file will be at the extreme left margin
(character 1).

What is a ClipBoard
═══════════════════WHAT IS A CLIPBOARD══════════════════════════
ClipBoard???
Think of the ClipBoard as a temporary storage area for text.
For example: You want to copy a section of text in your
document and insert the same text in another section/s
of the document. One way to do this is to re-type the text
in each section of the document; in fact in TP-ET Ver. 1.0
that was your only way. In Ver. 2.0 you can highlight the
text and copy it to a storage are of memory called the
Clipboard. Whatever text you put in the Clipboard remains
there until it is replaced by new text. In short the
Clipboard cannot contain more than one section of text at
a time. There is one instance where the text in the
Clipboard will be overwritten without you selecting a new
section of text and that is when you are Merging a file
from disk into your document. The merge file from disk is
stored in the Clipboard before it is inserted into your
document.
In short the ClipBoard is nothing more than a scratch pad
that you store text for later use.

Undo
══════════════════UNDO══════════════════════════════════════════════
Undo can be a life saver. Every time you press a printable key on
the keyboard a copy of your document before the keystroke is kept in
a separate part of memory. If you insert a keystroke in your
document then press F12 (Undo's shortcut key) the text prior to the
keystroke will replace the current text. Of course replacing a sinle
keystroke can be done by backspace. Undo is really for when you make
a large section delete IE: you highlight a section of your text then
press the Delete key. Undo will restore the text as it was before the
Delete.
One thing you MUST remember with Undo (for that matter any program
with an Undo) you must use Undo immediately after making the change.
As in the example above after a mass Delete if you were to press any
printable key first the text prior to the mass Delete would be lost.

Cut
═════════════════════════CUT════════════════════════════════════
Cut is used to Delete a highlighted section of text. You may
wonder why not just use Delete - there is one big difference.
Cut places whatever you Delete into the ClipBoard Delete does
not. An example: You have written a letter with the model
number - purchase date - brand of a dishwasher at the top of
a letter to the manufacturer. As you continue with the letter
you realize the information above would be better suited in a
different area of the letter. Highlight the text then use Cut
to delete it but yet place a copy of it in the ClipBoard. Move
the cursor to the area of the letter that the text should appear
then use the Paste Selection to insert the text.
ShortCut: Select the text using one of the above methods and
press CTRL+T

Paste
═══════════════PASTE════════════════════════════════════════════
Paste is used to insert text at the cursor position. The text is
that which is currently in the ClipBoard. The text usually Pasted
into a document was placed in the ClipBoard 2 different ways --
Text that was Cut or Copy. Either of these two functions
places the selected text in the ClipBoard. There are several other
functions that use the ClipBoard and it is possible that text
from these functions could be Pasted into the document; but
these are not the intended use for the Paste function. First
place text in the ClipBoard using Cut or Copy then place the cursor
where you want the text inserted than select the Paste function.
Mouse:
Place the cursor where the text is to be inserted. Click
EDIT then Click Paste.

Delete
════════════════════DELETE══════════════════════════════════════
Delete removes the character or selected text from the document
and -- DOES NOT PLACE A COPY OF IT IN THE CLIPBOARD --.
Becareful using Delete. You cannot recover the text unless you
immediately use Undo. Once you press any other
character on the keyboard there will be no way to retrieve the
deleted text. Generally if you are just deleting a character or
two you would use Back Space or the Delete key. If you want to
remove a block of text from the document and do not want it
placed in the ClipBoard use the Delete function in the EDIT menu.
An example would be if you had text in the ClipBoard that you
were pasting into the document at various areas and did not
want this text to be replaced in the ClipBoard. Using the
Delete function would remove the block of text from the document
while leaving the ClipBoard text untouched.

Center A Line
═══════════════════CENTERING A LINE═════════════════════════════
Center A Line means just what it says. You can only center one
line at a time. In other words you cannot select a block of
text and then try to center the entire block in one operation.
If that is what is desired then you must center each line
individually. In order to center a line you must select the
entire line then use the Center A Line function. If you just
select a few words in a line of text and use the Center A Line
functions you may be in for some strange results. If you select
more than one line of text then try to use the Center A Line
function you will receive an error message.
Mouse:
Select the desired line of text by placing the mouse
cursor on the left margin of the line. Press the Left
Button down and hold it down. Drag the Mouse down one
line, let up on the Left Button. The desired line should
now be selected. Click EDIT then Click Center A Line.

Word Wrap (Edit Screen)
════════════════WORD WRAP═══════════════════════════════════════
There are two states of Word Wrap ON/OFF. When Word Wrap is on
there will be no Horizontal Scroll Bar at the bottom of the Edit
Screen. Text will wrap to the next line at or before your Right
Margin depending on the length of the current word. Word Wrap
is very handy when you want to concentrate on writting your
document and not be concerned about coming to the Right Margin.
In order to start a new paragraph simply press the Enter key
twice. This will insert a Carriage Return an Line Feed at the
current line of text plus add a blank line between the two
paragraphs. When your letter is printed TP-ET will
determine where each line actually breaks and will insert a
Carriage Return Line Feed combination.
Even if your settings have Word Wrap active you can turn it off
from the EDIT menu. An example of not wanting Word Wrap would be
if you are typing up a list of items. You don't care about the
Right Margin because you are not going to use TP-ET to print
the document; instead you are going to use the DOS COPY PRN
command. One reason for doing this is you could type the
document then save it to disk. Exit TP-ET; set your printer say
for condensed print (132 character per line) then use the DOS
COPY PRN command to print the document.
With Word Wrap ON you cannot have a line longer than 79
characters. With Word Wrap OFF you could have a line as long
as 30,000 characters. With Word Wrap OFF you will see a
Horizontal Scroll Bar at the bottom of the Edit Screen.
If Word Wrap is ON there will be a check mark to the left of
Word Wrap in the EDIT menu.

replace the find. You have several options you may select. You
can make the Find case sensitive and/or automatically replace
each occurrance or ask if you want the current find replaced.
Unless you are very sure of every occurrance it is best to have
TP-ET stop and ask before replacing.
If you want the entire file to be searched you should first press
CTRL-HOME to go to the top of the file. Then select Find - Replace.
If you want to be asked before each replacement another window
will open at the bottom of the screen. You have the chose to
Change - Skip - Cancel the operation. There is one quirk that
you should be aware of when using Change - Skip - Cancel. TP-ET
will highlight the find word/phrase for a second then when the
Change - Skip - Cancel buttons show the highlight will disappear.
Watch close to see where the highlight is. This is not a program
error but a quirk of VB/DOS the programming language used for
TP-ET. Hopefully Microsoft will fix this in the next version.
When TP-ET cannot find any more matches a message window will
open telling you number of matches found or if no matches were
found.
Mouse:

Codes
════════════════════CODES═══════════════════════════════════════
All selections in the Codes Menu insert an embedded printer
code into your document. When the printer driver encounters the
embedded code the proper printer code is inserted at that point
to carry out the desired operation. Most of the selections are
nothing more than ON/OFF switches. Pica and Elite are ON switches
only. Selecting Pica when Elite is in effect shuts Elite OFF and
turns Pica ON and visa-versa. The character that appears in your
document is the control character that tells the printer driver
what action to take.
Most all of the embedded printer functions must be turned OFF
when the effect is no longer desired. For example: Suppose you
want to Bold a section of text. You would select Bold from the
Codes menu and the control character would appear at the
cursor position on the Edit Screen. ALL TEXT THAT FOLLOWED WOULD
BE BOLD FACE. To stop Bold you would once again select Bold
from the Codes Menu. Another control character would appear.
Except for Pica and Italic you must turn OFF the embedded
function when you no longer want the effect.
Not all embedded printer functions may be allowed by your
printer driver. If a function is not allowed it will appear as
grayed out in the Codes Menu. Selecting a grayed out function
will cause no action to be taken. If the printer driver is the
Generic than Codes on the menu bar will be grayed out. No
embedded functions are supported by the Generic driver; only raw
text is sent to the printer. This driver should work with all
printers.

════════════════════BOX DRAWING CHARACTERS══════════════════════
TP-ET allows you to draw boxes using one of four sets of box
drawing characters. These boxes are not graphics and will work
with all video adapter cards. Whatever set you selected in the
Settings Screen will be the set used by the Edit Screen. You can
not change sets in the Edit Screen. There are several basic rules
you should follow while using the Box Drawing feature. First you
cannot use the arrow navigation keys to draw the box. You have to
use the SHIFT - F1-F6 key combination.
SHIFT-F1 Draws the upper left hand corner:
SHIFT-F2 Draws the horizontal:
SHIFT-F3 Draws the upper right hand corner:
SHIFT-F4 Draws the vertical
SHIFT-F5 Draws the lower left hand corner:
SHIFT-F6 Draws the lower right hand corner:
To start a box place the cursor on the line that will contain
the upper left hand corner of the box. Use the Space Bar
to move over to where the box will start. Draw the top line
of the box. Use the vertical character for the left and right
sides of the box on successive lines. Use the lower left
hand corner - horizontal - and lower right hand corner to
finish the box. If you want to type text inside the box
position the cursor where you want the text to begin then
use the OVERTYPE MODE. If you use the Insert Mode you will
push the right side of the box to the right with each
character you type. Press the INS key to toggle between the
Insert and Overtype mode.
TIP: Once you have the box completed and any text typed in
it you can center the box in the middle of the
document. You have to center each line individually.
put the cursor on the left margin of each line that
contains the box, select the line,
and press the Short Cut Key for Center A Line CTRL+C.
By holding down the SHIFT-FUNCTION KEY combo you can make
successive characters on the screen IE: SHIFT-F2 held down
will draw continous horizontal characters.

This is the recommended way. The above two
methods are far to slow. Short cut keys are
SHIFT-F1 - SHIFT-F6. See the Que sheet - manual

easy to memorize.

Due to the Programming Language it is impossible to know where

When you select Page Break TP-ET uses the same method used to
send text to the printer and recognize page breaks. In this case
instead of output going to the printer the cursor is placed at
the end of the page. You will also see which page break is being
displayed IE: page 1 - 2 - 3 etc. Once you know where the page
will break you can adjust your text so it will not break at
undesired locations. For instance if a page break occurs at the
third line of a paragraph; press the Enter key at the beginning

first time you load TPET. Another cause is if you delete
TPET.DRV from the disk or move it to a different sub-dir.
Or Have TP-ET.EXE in one sub-dir and TPET.DRV in
