  2. UFO SIGHTING LINKED TO FILM                                            03/02/96

  7. A UFO reported by several people in north-west Scotland at the weekend may have
  8. escaped from Lock Ness.
  9.  
  10. Police at Ullapool gave chase but failed to catch up with the large shimmering
  11. object.
  12.  
  13. One theory is that a large promotional blimp or balloon may have escaped from a
  14. party on the banks of Lock Ness to celebrate the world premiere for the film of
  15. the same name.

  17. Police logged the first report of a large low-flying object moving slowly
  18. across the night sky and giving off a blue and white light around 8:30pm on
  19. Saturday.

  21. Several people called to say it was moving across the Scoraig peninsula and
  22. heading in a south-westerly direction towards the Minch and the Western isles.

  24. "That was a fully corroborated sighting which was reported by several people
  25. independantly," said PC Sheila Slaughter, "The witnesses were sensible people
  26. and very reliable." She and a colleague set off in pursuit of the UFO but it
  27. had vanished by the time they got to a suitable vantage point.

  29. They received a further report of a sighting at Braemore junction, north east
  30. of Ullapool at 1am.

  32. A Coastguard spokesman said: "We understand there was a light show at Aldourie
  33. Castle at Lock Nes and that a large balloon or blimp may have been anchored
  34. there at one point. No-one seems to have seen it there last night. We suspect
  35. it may have got loose."
