  2. TELEVISION STATION LOSES BID TO HAVE MATERIAL OPENED UP                23/01/96

  7. A Las Vegas television station on Monday lost a bid to unseal material
  8. connected to a lawsuit against government officials filed by former workers at
  9. the U.S. Air Force operating location near Groom Lake.
  10.  
  11. U.S. District Judge Philip Pro rejected a motion by KLAS-TV, Channel 8, to
  12. unseal the transcript of and documents related to a June 20 hearing regarding
  13. the litigation.

  15. Despite the setback, Pro granted the station's request for status as a
  16. legitimately interested party in the case for purposes of challenging his
  17. orders.

  19. The station had also sought edited versions of the documents, saying national
  20. security could be protected without such a sweeping sealing of all material.

  22. Pro, in his order, agreed with an idea that the military had proposed - that
  23. edited versions of the documents be provided after the litigation had been
  24. completed.

  26. The workers claim they suffered various injuries as a result of exposure to
  27. hazardous wastes at the base, 35 miles west of Alamo.
